Best state for gun freedom

So I decided to vote with me feet! And am researching a best conservative/gun friendly state to move to. Please advise... I'm a 25-yo software developper in financial district in Manhattan, NYC. I would preferably like to move to a *larger* city. "Shall Issue" is a must for me, like we all here, I firmy believe in the 2nd, and would like to carry concealed without having to explain myself to anyone why I need/believe in self defense. The first state that came to mind was Florida. Bush in the office there. Castle Doctrine passed. And from what I checked, CCW permit is a nobrainer, aka no arrests and no mental institution on the record, right? Is Florida a firmly conservative state?

What about Arizona? New Mexico? Texas ???

The move is not an issue for me. I'm willing to relocate whereever it takes to life free! Please be so kind and give me a sound advice. What states have castle doctrine or simillar laws? How about the ease of CCW? BTW, Vermont and Alaska are I think out of the question:)

Indiana is a great state for gun laws, but as a big-city guy you might be disturbed by the occasional view of a corn field even if you lived in Indianapolis.

Texas is a good state for gun laws, and has several big cities for you to live in. I am not much of a city person, but enjoyed going to a conference in San Antonio. Dallas and Houston are also good sized cities.
 
I would say Miami tops the list. All the fun stuff you enjoy in Manhattan, plus gorgeous beaches, perfect weather...and a rather "relaxed" political climate. Very liberal in terms of CCW, etc.
 
Florida is a very strange state. The east is liberal and all my friends from Wall Street retire there. The west coast is conserative and getting crowded as hell. The panhandle is pure redneck ( and that's a good thing ) but no really big cities.
Getting a CCW is easy.
LEO's on the east coast are uptight as hell if they find you're carrying. The rest of the state they talk about guns and don't write the ticket.

You might want to look at Atlanta, Georgia. Shall issue, NFA's are legal. We don't call it Castle Doctrine but we have a new law that specifically states there is no duty to retreat.
 
Pick a state rated "D" or "F" by Brady!

According to The Brady Campaign:)barf: ) the three states in question received the following grades in regard to gun laws:

Indiana: D
Texas: D-
Florida: F+

Of course for our purposes, F is the most desirable, followed closely by D:D .

I live in Indiana and I have no complaints about our gun laws; carry permits are easily obtainable (as long as you are not a criminal or have been under psychiactric treatment) and the state just changed from a 4 year permit to a lifetime permit.

I bought a new 1911 two weeks ago - walked out of the gun shop with it in 20 minutes. My buddy who lives in Minnesota says it takes two freaking weeks to buy a handgun up there.

I'd say the Brady Campaign has done a service for all of use by providing their "grades" for states and their violation of your rights as a gun owner. Go here http://www.stategunlaws.org/viewstate.php?st=AK and check any state. You'll want states with "D" and "F" grades, but pay special attention to the break down of the overall grade so that you can see why the state got it's rating.

This is important because some state's won't let you give your honor student eagle scout a .22 pistol or allow him/her to purchase ammo or a shotgun or rifle for hunting until they're 18 while they regulate where and how you may carry a handgun for defense.

That'll never happen in Texas. They charge 70 bucks for a renewal. That would mean a loss of revenue. Nope, they're always lookin' for new ways to tax so they can spend. They ain't going to CUT a cash cow.:rolleyes:

Something beyond gun laws in Texas to think about, though, no state income tax. Forget New Mexico, no CCW permits. You can open carry, very few actual laws there, but no legal concealed carry. the place is run by Democrats and that's never a good thing for the second ammendment. We had to get rid of Ma Richards and her veto before we could bet a carry law here and there's no open carry. Texas is very slowly straightening out some of the moronic gun laws that have been around forever, such as the presumption of travel thing, but we ain't the best I wouldn't think, in the nation.

If you want true gun freedom, you can't make them "out of the question" in my opinion... Vermont (and AK) is one of the few states where you can carry a gun (handgun, rifle, or shotgun) literally anywhere and not be hassled (except possibly in the lower towns bordering Massachusetts where liberal flatlanders take offense)... Opening day of deer season in Northern VT is a holiday!!!

Utah is a damn good state for Gunlaws.

You can carry into places that serve alcohol, carry into schools, and most churches.

Only places you can't are courthouses, federal facilities, etc.

Class 3... no problem.

And Salt Lake City is a pretty decent sized city, but still close enough to drive 20 minutes and shoot in the outdoors. Plus, really booming businesswise.

Good to hear they've pulled their heads out. Now, to get reciprocity with Texas. I travel, on occasion, to Arizona and always am carrying through NM. Figure they gotta catch me. I hunt up there on occasion, too, over in the Guadelupe mountains. I'm sure you and others would like to be able to carry in Texas on trips to El Paso or something, eh? I wish some sort of national reciprocity law were possible.

Yep, even lefties have guns out here. You're likely to see a goth pierced kid standing next to a veteran at the gunstore or range; in fact, it's probably gramps and grandson.

Not true. If you have the purchase permit, which takes one week to get, you can show up at a gun store, buy a handgun, and walk out in as little time as that takes.
 
If you really,really want a big city, texas may be the right place. the entire I 35 corridor is a megalopolis from Dallas./Ft Worth to San Antonio and probably across to Houston. People do complain about the heat and humidity. Some recently arrived believe they may have landed on Venus and some experience quite a bit of culture shock to go with it.

Since George Bush Replaced Anne Richards as Governor, the gun legislation has become very friendly compaired to what it had been for 100 + years before. This could change when/if the leftists take back the state government. They believe that they can do this based on immigration from Mexico though I'm not sure they can trick the Mexicans into voting for them. This year, the republican governor is way ahead in the polls. He has really courted the gun people vote by issueing reciprocal license agreements and unilateral recognition of CHLs from all over the country. A lot of people don't like him because he is de-funding state agencies and they blaime him for the screwed up school system. (All the King's Horses and Men couldn't fix that.)
The state agencies manage to gutter along in their accustomed uselessness even with reduced funds.

Richard Friedman-The Kinkster is running as an independent. He can't fix the schools or the border leakage either but has made uncharacteristic pro gun statements for the press. In his incarnation as Kinky Friedman Private Investigator, He remarks " If somebody shoots me, they're going to have to bring their own gun." He spent some time in NYC handing out at the Lonestar Cafe and Vadam Street.

the Democrats seem to be wallowing in their own excretia and can't settle on a viable candidate.
 
Gun friendly Florida

Is Florida a barely red state, or vastly majorly red state?

How likely is it to change?
 
WOOHOO! Just went to Brady website and found Louisiana with a Solid F. BTW I think New Orleans is actually going to be a great place to live in 5-10 years, excellent place for a younger person to speculate.
 
there are four blue counties

Alachua, Broward, Miami Dade and Palm Beach


the rest of the state was red and I dont see it changing much
 
Counties and gun laws

Are there any further restrictions on guns and CCW in those four blue counties in Florida??? I don't want to step into a liberal poop once I move there :)
 
Something to keep in mind

about those blue counties in Florida and other states: they tend to be the karge urban counties and drive politics in the state. Greater Miami, Palm Beach and the Tallahassee area are all royal blue. Recall the 2000 election where Bush only won by a few hundred to a few thousand votes (various counts).

Many states are like that -- one or two major urban areas control the state politically. Illinois, New York, Missouri, California.

One state I haven't seen mentioned is Washington. Except for NFA, WA is still pretty gun friendly, was shall issue from 1961. The Puget Sound has its own microclimate that is actually milder than the NYC area and life is good unless you have to enter the Soviet of Seattle (AKA Sodom on the Sound). Thanks to state preemption, Seattleites live under the same liberal gun laws as the rest of us in free Washington.

And Washington also has among the most liberal of use-of-lethal-force laws in the country. Plus it's the only state in the union where, on a finding of self defense by a jury, the jury goes back into session to determine compensation for cost of defense, lost wages, etc. The most important impact of that law is that it acts as a disincentive to prosecutors to charge an individual, knowing that if the case isn't solid, they're going to pay.

hello mvorbrodt and LanEvo.Yes Florida is a friendly firearms state considering.Funny,I live in Miami and currently my house is for sale,2 main reasons being the prices have increased so dramatic in the last few years Im going north of Tampa where Ill be able to buy a house just as nice paid off for what Im going to get for this one,and be a short distance from 2 large cities with a nightlife musically that I like...Also,for me personally Im a rock-metal guitarist and the fact is Miami-Dade is now 95% latin which while I get along and love everybody, I feel out of place culturely and musically.South Florida does have good places to shoot,and the job market is good,although if you dont know spanish that may hinder you.And it all depends on personally what you want out of a city.
Florida is also a tax friendly state,though there are thing like insurance which is rising,my windstorm just jumped $130 a month...
Ive also considered Tennesse and Nevada,which are also friendly gun and tax states though housing prices have skyrocketed in Nevada
