I would like to buy a submachine gun (semiautomatic).

I'm looking for something that is lightweight, under 12 inches, extremely durable, and always reliable.

I like the TP9 by Brugger and Thommet. Tell me about any new guns I don't know about...

What about micro uzi, tec-9 (ive heard bad things), mac 10 or 11, 61 scorpion

I think I would like 9mm unless someone sways me.

So, are you looking for a large handgun, or are you looking for a pistol-caliber short-barreled rifle? IOW, do you want to be able to mount a stock, or not?

i've shot quite a lot of them in semi and full auto and never really found one i liked in either semi or full.

i had a mac10 .45acp full auto for several years and it was a ton of fun, but totally impractical for anything beyond putting big grins on the faces of new shooters.

i had an HK USC/UMP conversion also in 45acp. loved it for plinking cans, but the recoil was more than i liked for fast followup shots. some LEO friends used the full-auto UMP version and said it was uncontrollable. 3rd-hand hearsay for you admittedly

shot lots of 9mm uzi and mp5. they're more usable, but... i still didn't like them.

the only one i DID like was a VERY tiny full-auto "micro uzi" that a friend of mine owns. i really enjoyed shooting it, and it was a very compact package. very difficult to find though and NFA of course

guns like the sten just totally suck. totally.

thompsons... meh. and $25k.

i also used to have a FN PS90. i didn't like it because the plastic trigger was horrid and made for very slow reset on the sear and slow followup shots. but i imagine in full-auto it would be a total joy to shoot. very ergonomic and 50rnd mags. w00t! never even seen an actual P90 though

edit: check out Knight's new PDW

Thanks for the input everyone. To clarify the purpose... I want something that I can carry with a CWP. (Not that I really need an uzi for personal protection, I just like the option... a coolness factor you could say).

I'm not sure of all restrictions on carry weapons. I know that the gun must be less than 12 inches. I am unsure if one can carry a SBR. I would prefer an SBR so that I would have the option of putting on a front pistol grip and stock.

Carry of a SBR will vary by jurisdiction.

I have a MP5k-PDW SBR. It's not an everyday carry item. It's 2-ish pounds heavier than a 1911, requires a special rig or a bag, and with the 15 round magazine installed so it doesn't print like a mother offers nothing at short range that my Sig 226 doesn't in an immediate defense capacity. If I have time to shoulder the weapon, deploy the stock, etc, yes, it's a profoundly better weapon and gives massively better follow up shots - but realistically, I'm not going to be drawing it to defend myself at the corner store.

As a discreet camping gun or car gun or home defense weapon I prefer it, but as a daily carry gun, just not going to work real well.

..."Best submachinegun?"...

one that costs less than a good used automobile, which would be MUCH more usefull.

I would stay away from the TP9 , the one I had was horribly unreliable. FTF/FTE every few rounds, prone to limp wristing and had the cheapest POS mags I have ever seen. As much as I wanted to like this gun, it just did not want to like me back. My Uzi on the other hand has been totally reliable.

sub machine guns do not lend themselves to realistic concealment for normal people outside of hollywood. you might want to rethink that. get something practical.

The AR-15 is always a good option :)

Here's my PDW option. SBR registered DPMS lower with a RRA 7" 9mm upper. Compact, accurate, reliable (With ball ammo), and blast to shoot.

If your State allows, Draco or Champion pistol, after getting the paper work squared away with the revenuers, knock out the rear trunnion and pop in a new one for butt stock... Voila (pronounced "Vwa la" BTW) Romanian SBR.

Sub Gun

In the military I shot the M3 .45 cal "greasegun", which was alot of fun, controllable and packs a punch. They are more affordable, easy to maintain controllable and all steel construction. I think a company named "Valkyrie" sells a semi auto grease gun, I've seen auctions at "GunsAmerica". You might check that out... It seems they run about 750-1200 bucks.

Another option is a Glock 9mm with the 33 round mag...

Has anyone had any firsthand experience with a KRISS? If the recoil is as minimal as advertised, that might be a great choice assuming you have the tax stamp to buy the SBR version.

..."Has anyone had any firsthand experience with a KRISS?"...

not me, but read a review on it that stated the recoil counteraction system does work. that said i have fired 3 different systems of carbine length .45ACP, and recoil is not an issue in them. it would be worthwhile in a fully, but these will never be made available to the public.

jeff cooper, "another cure for a problem that does not exist."

Regardless of legality, there is no way I would carry an NFA firearm as a concealed carry weapon. Personally I think you're asking to be looked at much more closely if you have occasion to actually use such a thing to defend yourself outside your home.

unless your military or police carrying a SBR and or using one even in the most justifiable shoot is going to get you in a heap of trouble.
:(
"he was carrying an evil concealed tactical assualt rifle":uhoh:

plus you can conceal something like an MP5k but after half an hour the coolness rapidly goes away:(.
get spotted by any LEO and your be in trouble if only half an hour of the talking to you checking you car and generally asking why the hell are you carrying that! It may be legal but hardly normal.

get spotted by any LEO and your be in trouble

Especially depending on the state.

Texas for instance allows for NFA firearms but it's a defense against PROSECUTION if it's tax stamped, not a defense against ARREST.

So, you can be arrested for carrying one but the charges will be dropped later if it's legally owned.

Better check the fine print in your state.

Just a bad idea all the way around.

I only shot H&K MP5s and an UZI so far. I prefer the H&K, because of it's ergonomics/general design and accuracy. But the UZI was a good shooter too and far less expensive (where I live at least).

Lets stay on the topic of the guns themselves. I appreciate the concern of all contributors but lets have the consequences of certain actions be for a different thread.

So the kriss and magpul FMJ9 are not available to the public???

I like the Mini Uzi and idea for a glock with 30 round mag.

the kriss is available in semi-automatic which defeats the point of the gun entirely. The recoil system was designed to be used in fully automatic, so it makes no sense in a semi.

the magpul FMG-9 is vapor ware. You will not see it in production.
