I'm moving in 6 months from Virginia to Oregon. We are not driving otherwise all the guns would be coming with me in the car. I have read horror stories online about shipping your guns via ups and fedex and that if you hide the guns in the moving truck or pod instead and they get lost, then no insurance claim for you .

We are all flying there. Can I check my guns? I have 2 long guns and 3 handguns. If I can check them can I insure them? Because if the airline employees lose/steal them and refuse to do anything I'm going to be enraged. The same goes for ups/fedex. If I mailed them via ups I would insure the packages for sure.

I understand if I shipped them via ups/fedex they would have to go to a FFL dealer. Would the gun shop charge me a FFL fee on every gun?

In Oregon you have to be a resident for a full year before you can purchase a handgun. I wont have any issue collecting my 3 handguns from an Oregon FFL gun shop will I?

1. You should have insurance on your firearms already. The NRA offers around $2500 free for being a member. You just have to activate it.

2. It's perfectly legal to bring your firearms with you when you fly. NON-TSA locked hard case.

3. You can legally send your guns to yourself. No FFL needed.

4. It's going to be brutally expensive to send them via common carrier. Just get some good hard cases and pay the airline to haul them.

5. See #3 and #4.

6. Why oh why are you moving to Oregon? It's a liberal hellhole. I lived in Portland for 25 years till I moved to Texas in 2014. The land use laws in Oregon make it impossible to move out to the country, buy some land and build a house.

#3 is the way I would go. I've flown with firearms before, it's not a big deal. You have to tell TSA you are declaring firearms, TSA will check them and (at least the last time) then had me lock the case. AS for insurance, your homeowner's policy will cover anything over your deductible. The NRA insurance will help there. You can also contact your agent and ask for a 'rider' policy and declare the value of each of your firearms. You document it with pictures and a list of the serial numbers. If they're broken, lost, stolen etc, insurance should cover it.

You don't tell the TSA. You inform the gate agent of the airline.

Most homeowners/renters insurance policies have very low coverage for firearms. Normally in the range of $1000 or less. Also most companies in the homeowners/renters insurance business don't want to insure your firearms. They make that known by the ruinous rates they charge for coverage.

The NRA endorse supplemental policy isn't too bad for small collections of normal firearms. However, once you get serious it get's expensive also. $70 for $6,500 of coverage, which is actually only $4,000 since you get $2,500 with your membership.

In my case the NRA policy would run $739 to cover my firearms. I pay $185 for the same amount of coverage through Eastern. I don't have to provide pictures or a list merely to obtain coverage either.

Checking guns at the luggage counter is no big deal. The airline's website should have a description of the procedure to follow. Flying with them would be the best way to go, in my opinion.

To clarify my statement a bit more, the photos and serial # list are kept at home or in the safe or in a safe place. My insurance runs about what Cannibul's does through USAA. I do list the serial #'s of the firearms as well as any serial numbers on the scopes/optics. In my personal file I have a list of all of the pertinent info as well as replacement cost quotes from reputable gun smiths on rebuilding them. Some of the more expensive parts are actually getting the stocks made.

I've moved twice with guns. Once from Texas to california and once from California to Texas.

The Texas to california move was done via UHaul pods because I was poor and it was the cheapest way to ship. I left the California illegal magazines in a bank safety box for the first move.

The move back to Texas had a much higher allowance, so I rented a truck and drove everything I owned myself.

I would highly recommend keeping the guns with you and driving a car. I moved to a different city in Texas. The drive to pick up old magazines was rough.

...sounds like to me you have 6 months to change your mind and avoid the debacle all together. Shipping your guns to you (or other government licensed identified person) is just beginning of your 2A problems in OR

I just sayin'

Sorry to hear that.

You can check them. It's very easy to do and usually takes very little extra time at the airport. I've actually had it speed up the process of getting through the security circus, believe it or not

I understand if I shipped them via ups/fedex they would have to go to a FFL dealer.

That is incorrect. You can ship them directly to yourself.

I would just check them on the plane. It will only cost you the price of the case and the baggage fee. Checking a gun is very easy.

Don't let people scare you off Oregon. It is a fantastic place to live and you have nothing to worry about gun wise.

Nothing but the UNC law and whatever is going to come out of the legislature this year. Just look to your north and south. The progressives in Oregon can't stand being behind what California and Washington do.

I'm not sure what you mean by "UNC" Maybe that was supposed to be UBC or Universal Background Checks? If so they haven't affected me one bit. I sold a gun last week without any issues.

Fat fingers. UBC.

Did you follow the law?

Yes. I've sold 8 firearms since I moved to Oregon 2 years ago from Alabama. All were sold the same way: Post online, collect money, ship to buyer's FFL. If the buyer was local and wanted to meet face to face we would just meet at a local FFL and he could have done the paperwork there. The going rate here is $25 for a check, that is $10 for the State of Oregon and $15 for the FFL. FFLs charge $10 for the Oregon fee even on new guns.

Personally I prefer to ship, it is way easier than trying to meet up with someone - half of which never show.

You might want to be careful about saying how many in X number of years. Sadly the BATFE have prosecuted people for dealing without a license for much less.

Good luck in Oregon. One of the best days in my life was March 28th 2014 when I saw Oregon in my rearview mirror as I was headed to Texas.

The rules about dealing without license have little to do with numbers and everything to do with intent. I am not buying and selling guns with the intent to make a profit so don't worry one bit about the BATFE. If I find a gun interesting I buy it. When it no longer holds my interest I sell it.

I'm glad you like Texas. Not enough snow or mountains there for me. I like being 1 hour from the beach and 1 hour from the slopes.

That statement isn't true and you know it. It's a neat saying that people like to say but it's geographically impossible.

There's nowhere in Portland where you can do that. There are no ski resorts in the Coast range and there's no place in Portland that's one hour from the coast. If you live west of Hillsboro you're an hour from the coast. But living there the ski slopes on Mt. Hood are at least two hours away. If you live in Gresham you're an hour from the slopes but at least two hours from the coast.

As per Google maps. From Ski Bowl to Tillamook is three hours if there's no traffic problems going over the west hills or on the road going to the coast.

Per Google maps:
Summit Ski Area in Government Camp, OR is 1 hour 10 minutes
Cannon Beach, OR is 1 hour and 25 minutes.

So yes I rounded but it is much closer to 1 hour than 2. That also assumes I drive the 55 mph speed limit on US 26 - which I don't. I'm also an earlier riser so the roads are empty.

I will second that. Even 40-50 years ago with higher speed limits and no traffic it was not 1 hour. Today more like 2 hours or more, usually more I don't care what Google says. I used to drive to the coast almost every weekend in the mid 60's-early 70's and could make it from Portland to Lincoln City in about an 1hr and 15min going 55-80 from Portland to McMinnville, McMinnville to Grande Ronde 75-90mph and GR to Lincoln City 45-75mph at 12-1AM on the morning and good dry road. Any time else or bad weather or heavy traffic figure at least and 1hr & 1\2 to 2 hrs.

As I mentioned above I was rounding. 1 Hour to the Beach or Slopes rolls off the tongue easier than 1 hr 17.5 minutes to the coast / 1 hour 17.5 minutes to the slopes. :) Generally if I'm going to the beach it is to dig clams and I'm rolling out before daybreak. Otherwise if we are heading that way we don't make it to the coast but are fishing, hiking, or backpacking (or fishing while backpacking) in the Coastal range.

Does it really matter if it takes 1 hour or 1 1/2 hour to get to the mountains? It that the difference between Oregon being a great place to live? Seriously, if you like outdoor stuff Oregon is fantastic. I also like being close to snow but not having to shovel it. The only bad thing is too many people like to get outdoors here so you have to get an early start to get a good campsite while backpacking.

It's only a 16% difference one way and a 41% difference the other.

Oregon USED to be a great place to live. Not so much anymore. You're new to the state. Your baseline is much lower. Those of us who lived in Oregon years ago see how much it's changed and how bad it's gotten. I love the outdoors. I love to hunt and fish. It's one of the reasons I left Oregon. The fishing is a ghost of what it used to be. The hunting is almost gone. Taxes are killing the state.

Listen to Lars Lars Larson.on the radio. He's been in Oregon most of his life. He knows what Oregon used to be.

Here are some research points for you.

PERS and the PERS funding shortfall.
Trimet and how they fund their light rail.
The budget shortfall and how it's going to be filled.
The Oregon Health Exchange debacle.
Portland water and sewer problems.

My daughter and her husband moved to Portland after my wife and I left. Her husband received a job offer from of the microchip manufacturers in the area. He's an engineer and she's a critical care nurse. They're young. They love it there. However they are comparing it to Knoxville Tennesse where they both went to school and met. They just recently found a house. $400,000 for a 1200 sf house on a 5000 sf lot in north Portland. Five years ago those houses in that neighborhood were less than half that. However the land use laws in Oregon artifically inflate housing prices due to land shortages. In contrast our house here in Texas, 2500 sf single level on 2.5 acres cost us $264,000.

I'm hoping you don't have any thoughts about buying some land outside the UGB and building a house. The UGB is the Urban Growth Boundry. Outside the UGB you have to have 80 acres AND show farm income for 3 out of 5 years BEFORE you can ask permission to build a house.

I have read horror stories online about shipping your guns via ups and fedex...
Link to these "horror stories"?:scrutiny:
I get 150+ guns a month shipped to me via FedEx or UPS and RARELY is there anything other than a delay in delivery. In fact, in eight years I've had ONE gun go missing.....and that was a USPS shipment.

We are all flying there. Can I check my guns?
Yes
I have 2 long guns and 3 handguns. If I can check them can I insure them?
Depends on the airline.
Because if the airline employees lose/steal them and refuse to do anything I'm going to be enraged. The same goes for ups/fedex. If I mailed them via ups I would insure the packages for sure.
UPS is no different in quality of service as FedEx.

I understand if I shipped them via ups/fedex they would have to go to a FFL dealer.
Ship the long guns via USPS addressed to yourself at your address in the destination state. Neither UPS or FedEx will deliver to a nonlicensee.
Would the gun shop charge me a FFL fee on every gun?
Some do, some don't. I charge $10 per gun plus actual shipping/insurance/adult signature. I'm sure there are others that do that as well.

In Oregon you have to be a resident for a full year before you can purchase a handgun. I wont have any issue collecting my 3 handguns from an Oregon FFL gun shop will I?
Contact a dealer in Oregon for that.
