Best wood stock rifle

If reliability, operating and maintenance ease are important, get the Winchester. Model 70 actions have been the base for wood stocked match rifles that shot test groups smaller that modern big stiff ones used in benchrest have yet to equal.

At 600 yards:
* Phase one was several 10-shot groups all under 1.5 inches, smallest about .7 inch.
* Phase two was one 40-shot group at 1.925".

Pre '64 Win 70 action trued up bolt and receiver faces bedded in a P.J. Wright walnut stock, Hart 1:11 twist 26" barrel with WCC58 match cases full length sized with 42 grains of IMR4064 under Lapua D46 185-gr. match bullets; rifle clamped in free recoiling machine rest.

Impressive to say the least. I have always been fond of the Model 70. Awesome trigger and actions.

Mr. Bart’s mention of wood stocks made by P.J. Wright reminded me of a couple of target style stocks P.J. made for me many moons ago. I still have them both: one being one of the prototype target models offered by FFV. It’s a fine rifle but they never caught on with the target crowd. The other is a M-70 shown in attached photos. Not only did P.J. make superb target stocks but he also had an artist’s eye for graceful lines and proportion, an element often missing, or ignored, in ordinary target stocks. Plus superb craftsmanship in checkering and other fine details, as you will note in these photos. Made back ‘70’s it’s one of the best, most accurate, OTC rifles I’ve ever owned, with a barrel by Paul Marquart, who also did chambering and fitting..

I admit I'm not up on current stocks, but from what I've seen in the past I'd say the Winchester would be the best bet. However, I also have a Tikka T3 Scout and I love it...but it's not wood.

my vote: winchester model 70 chambered in 270 win. 130 gn berger bullet @ 3000 fps: +1.5" @ 100 yds., 0" @ 200 yds., - 6" @ 300 yds., -18" @ 400 yds., -38" @ 500 yds., remaining energy @ 400 yds is 1427 ft lbs at 2200 fps. deer out to 400 with a good scope.

I am looking to buy a new rifle but only with a wood stock. I have narrowed it down too the Remington 700 CDL,Tikka T3 hunter,Bergara B-14 Timber and the Winchester model 70 featherweight. Which would be the best for hunting deer and caliber for shots under 400 yards??
