Wanderer, you are right, the Whitney, 1st and 2nd had square back trigger guards and the 3rd had a round guard. This information is from "Colt Single Action" by Dennis Alder which includes photos of the guns.

Thanks I was just wandering. Thought I'd read somewhere that was the case.

Maybe one of the replica manufactures made some 2nd models with the round trigger guard.

Actually the terms First Model, Second Model and Third Model are modern names instituted by collectors. Colt did not produce the Dragoon variations as different 'models'. The changes we now use to identify models (cylinder stop notches, trigger guard shape) were phased in on Colt's production line, so that some of the original guns were 'mixed models'. That has occurred with some replica manufacturers as well.

The term 1st model, 2nd model and 3rd model comes from collectors as a way of differentiating the various changes in the Dragoon as the manufacturing process progressed, it was not used when the revolver was in production.

The Dragoon in the photo would be considered a 3rd model because of the round trigger guard. It may be an early or late 3rd model, the type of latch on the loading lever would determine that.

I see mykeal beat me to the draw, ha ha

my 1858 Remy

That makes me wonder about my 1858 Remy. I bought the kit from Dixie and they stated that it had over sized frame and grips. Is that period correct or is it just a Pietta design? I bought the oversized frame because I have pretty big hands and thought it would fit better. :D

Nice Dragoon you have. How does it shoot? I have more fun with mine than any other gun I own. Congrats!

Mick,
I never fired it yet. I will one these days. I had a Dragoon with an 18' barrel.
I fired that a lot. It didn't have a stock. But it had a holster. I got it at a gun show $250. But I trade it for A zouave rifle and cash $250. I sold the zouave for $400. But the guy who bought it, told me I would never find a stock. I guess he was smarter then I. Because I did find 2 stocks. And wish I still had it.

Vintage CVA 50 mountian what is worth in a deal

I need to help with this. Think on trading for one. I say pictures of it and it doesn't look bad. Serial # 75xxx, ether a Sharon or Douglas barrel. What do you think trade value would be.
Thanks
