I am looking at a Magnum Research BFR in 45-70. I am debating between the 10" and 7.5" barrels. So far I'm leaning towards the 7.5" for better balance but I am curious how much muzzle velocity you lose with 2.5" less barrel. Is there much of a difference in velocity with the shorter barrel? Thanks for the input.

Can't help you much, but here goes. I've shot a friend's BFR in 45-70 with the 10" bbl. Superbly accurate firearm and the recoil was not as bad as I expected. No 'snap', but a big slow-rolling recoil. Certainly controllable.

My only gig against it is that it is SO long as to be almost not 'man portable'. I don't know how you get that thing around in the woods! If the ONLY use is targets, maybe so. Otherwise, I'd opt for the short barrel cause I think you will still get all the velocity you need for anything up to taking a limit of road graders or some such.
