My mom, Maxine Ashcraft, had hip replacement surgery last September. She's 74 years old and decided to have the replacement in lieu of taking drugs for 5 or 6 years and then having the surgery when she is 80.

She is a very active lady, always keeping an impeccable house and cooking excellent food, besides keeping active with her doll club, antiques and other hobbies.

Well, something went wrong with the surgery. They thought it was an infection, so she went to Denver on Monday to have another surgery. They found out the new hip joint had somehow twisted and come loose, causing her pain. Also there was some infection. So they replaced the joint again and put her on six weeks of antibiotic IV and bed rest.

She will be depressed laying around for that amount of time. I was wondering if some of my friends on this forum could find the time to send her a card or your best wishes. It would cheer her up beyond measure.

Please send to:

Thank you, Larry Ashcraft

Larry my THR friend .. nothing would give me greater pleasure ... consider it done.

I am sorry she is having so much problem ... sometimes these things go smooth as silk ... and others, they get complicated. I hope after some time that it will all settle down and the result will be what is needed.

Hi Maxine!! Ole Phart P95 here ... hang in there y'hear!!:)

I know Pueblo is quite big but just remembered .. wife and I visited friends there last June .. Wilson Avenue IIRC ... haven't checked. Feel like I know the area tho - well, a bit!!

Prayers for your Mom on the way. Does she like to read? If so, what type of books?

Thanks all for your help. :) Books, hmm, she just read "The Grapes of Wrath". I'm going over there now and take the rest of my Steinbeck collection. I'll find out what else she likes and also which movies she would like.

Thanks all again. I'll have an update after we get back.

Thanks

Maxine (my wife's grandmother) has always been great about taking time to make sure everyone else around her is well takin' care of. I would like to say thanks to everyody here for taking the time to make her ordeal a little easier and maybe bring a smile to here face.

How's she doing?
She's doing pretty well. I think the pain has lessened since they replaced the bad hip joint, so she has just resigned herself to relax and read and watch some TV. We try to get by and visit to break up the monotony. My dad has been a big help around the house even though that's not his way. He's usually out in his shop puttering around.

Thanks for asking. :)

Just took the first batch of cards over to my mom (I hope there's more coming). Brightened her day, it did. She kept saying "Well, that was awfully nice of those folks".

Thanks to all who took the time out of their day to send her a card. :) Oh, and Penman, your calligraphy is Beautiful! She really appreciated that.

Thanks again, Larry

Sent one out yesterday, hope she likes it.

Is she internet savvy? If not, now would be an awful good time for her to start. I think you could get her started on something like webtv a lot more simply than learning the computer, and wouldn't require buying a computer.

Not internet savvy, but she has a computer and internet service. In fact, she may come on here and thank everybody, but I think she would rather send thank you cards when her strength is up to it.

Big scare last night. I stopped to give her some cards and a gift package from Cracker Barrel (Thanks, Steve!) She cheered up when she saw everything but she looked more 'down' than she has been.

Long story short: When she had the second surgery she was told that she would have to have a "temporary" hip joint (loaded with antibiotics) put and then three months later have another surgery and get her permanent joint. Well, the doctor said that he couldn't find any infection so she got her permanent joint and wouldn't have to come back. She and my dad were overjoyed. Well, she went to the doctor on Tuesday and he told her that she did indeed have a temporary joint and would have to come back. Said she must have misunderstood, being groggy from the surgery.

Well, my dad and sister sure didn't misunderstand, so my dad called the nurse yesterday morning and demanded an explanation (doctor's in Denver). Finally, last night, mom called and said the doctor called her and said he was indeed mistaken, she already has the new joint. Big sigh of relief. Don't these doctors look at their charts once in a while?

Anyway, sorry for the long post. The cards and letters really do cheer her up more than you can imagine.

Thanks, Larry

Thx for update Larry .... oh my ..... what an apparent load of confusion ... seems like (all too often) ... the left hand just does not know what the right hand is doing!!!

So - it is the NEW joint ... praise be. Let's hope that'll be an end of things ... and now just get on with recuperation.

Here's lookin at ya Maxine ..... :)

You're mom's quality Larry, I got a card back from her yesterday. She seems in good spirits. Tell her I said thanks for the card and my daughter liked it too.

Well, the Thank You goes to Larry *wink* and to his Wonderful Mom Maxine.

I too rec'd a wonderful card from Maxine.
Oh and Larry...be nice to me...seems like I made brownie points ;)
Maxine -I will continue to take your advice with my mom.

Another thing Larry...our Mom's ever meet...we both in a heap of trouble - we best keep these two separated. :D

Thanks guys. Mom was so happy with the cards she really wanted to thank everybody she could.

Yes, she's in much better spirits these days, getting around better too. Except for the trip to the emergency room Wednesday night (which she tried to keep a secret, but my nosy sister found her out :scrutiny: ). Seems she had more pain than she could handle, but now she's on new meds and feeling better.

sm, you're right, better not let them get together. :D

Well, I mentioned to Larry that I had had a card from Maxine but thought I'd post as much here, seeing how others have had replies.

Bless her. I was pleased to not only have received the card . which I might add was neither expected nor necessary ... but she also took the trouble to write some news too ... and that to me, a total stranger. I was impressed and moved.

Larry ... spoil her silly won't you ... she is a special lady ... even from this distance!:)

Guess I should have done this in the beginning...

Here's lookin at you Maxine :) .. xxx.
