Been trying to get setup to shoot the local 600 and 1K yard matches, and want to shoot in F-T/R. One of the pieces of gear that i'm no longer sure what i should be looking to get, is a bipod.

I'm strongly leaning toward a Harris, but i'm not sure which model i should be going for.
this gun will only ever be fired from a bench or prone, so should i be looking at the BR (6-9") or would the 9-13 be better suited? is the swivel feature really worth the extra money to a beginer?? what's the REAL difference in the regular and notched leg versions??

are their alternatives that are as good or better, while staying around the same price point <$100?

thank you for you time and input

I use the Harris swivel bipod 9-13". Mine is usually set to an inch or so off the bottom, call it a 10.5" bipod. My more limber friend does, too; I don't think you could get a low enough prone for the 6-9" bench model.

Yes, the swivel mount is worth having; the few places I have been, the firing line is bare ground, not a floor or pad. The Pod-Loc lever to really tighten down the swivel when you get the gun level is nice, too.

I have the standard spring loaded leg adjustments, but I have seen the notch type in use and it is more convenient to adjust as you set up for the lay of the land.

I have a Harris swivel, notch leg w/ pod-loc 9-13" and I find it too be too tall for me most of the time. If you are of the more barrel-chested variety, the 9-13" might be the ticket. For me, (6'3 200), the 6-9" works better for most cases.

Barrel chested?
More like beer belly, in my case.

Being that you have conflicting recommendations, I suggest you get in position with the gun on sandbags or blocks and measure the height you are comfortable with before buying a bipod.

A bit more than 100.00, but a bit more robust than a Harris.

saw two back in Feb at the first match of the year. have to say that i'm not $200 worth of impressed. for that much money there are a few things i'd expect to see. like say having the legs stamped/marked/graduated from the factory so that you KNOW that you've at least set it to the same starting height each time you set up. for $200 the customer should NOT being having to use a sharpie for that purpose!

two thoughts that DO come to mind are;
  1. If i was going to exceed the $100 price point of the Harris, i'd almost be inclined to save a little longer and by one of the Remples ("Canadian Ski" bipod)
  2. If i got serious about either of those (sinclair or Remple) i'd be REAL tempted to try and get plans/schematics and try my hand at making one (I'm a student machinist/wannabe gunsmith looking for an apprenticeship sponsor)

But i'm currently unemployed, and therefore shooting as inexpensively as I can. in fact for this year at least the odds are I won't be shooting in F-T/R, because i won't be able to afford a bipod untill after pretty much after the season's over.

on a completely different Note. When are the nationals this year? i've been told they'll be at Camp Butner NC this time around, and i may have to go visit my parents (who live 20-30 mins away) and go visit the matches with dad.

Maybe you could talk to Dad about a bipod for an early Christmas present.

actually I'm probably gonna wind up asking him to partially or fully pay for whichever stock i choose for this project.

wishing Richard's Microfit allowed for dealer pricing on their target styles...

anyway, hoping to get out to the range tomorrow and find out a few things, including the general bipod height i need.

Measured the height i have it sitting at while shooting off the bench today* and THAT height was a little over 7". do you usually need more or less height when prone as opposed to sitting at a bench?

and in case it matters greatly, I'm one of those shooters that have "a bit more than a beer belly" I'm 6' tall with a 54" waist, think santa claus' belly on a six foot tall Charlie Brown lookin dude.

*note: I'm not gonna bother to shoot this rifle from prone untill i've worked out any remaining kinks. and right now it's not producing (consistently) good enough groups to warrant going beyond the bench yet. still trying to eliminate as many variables as i can since it looks like i may have gotten a so-so barrel and may need to get it stress releived.:banghead:
