Birthday Ideas!

My birthday is coming up soon and I want some ideas. I cant spend much, my limit is around $300.....and I want somthing shooting related.

Go ahead, I know you guys can think up somthing......

A gun and some ammo? Not very much info here.

What do you have? What do you want? Do you hunt? What do you hunt? Do you carry? How long is your range? etc...

All I have is a .22 rifle and 2 20ga shotguns,

If I knew what I wanted, I wouldnt be asking you guys,

I do hunt, I hunt whitetail, but I dont need anything for my bow, which is what I hunt with.

I dont carry yet.

My range is 25-100 yards if I drive 25 mins, but it is 15 yards if I walk out my back door but I cant do anything loud, I live in a neighborhood.

That helps! A .22 pistol is tons of fun on the cheap, and helps develop transferable skills to any other handgun.

If you're not old enough to buy a handgun, another .22 rifle might be fun. If the one you already have is scoped, get one with good iron sights, and vice versa. Different skill sets, both of which are useful.

a .22 pistol is a good idea....is there anything out there that I can get for under $300? and how hard is it to find .22 ammo right now? I havent bought any in about 6 months...

I find .22LR easily and cheap.

I am a big fan of Ruger .22 pistols and High Standard .22 pistols.

The High Standard would be out of your price range but I'm sure you could find a good used Ruger for around or less than $300.

I just looked up .22 pistols on gunbroker and I see alot of Sig Sauer Mosquitos for sale....are they any good? most of then seem to be selling for around $300.

I'm a big fan of the Browning Buckmark pistols, many of which are even cheaper than the comparable Ruger models.

I, and many, have a Ruger Mk. III (or another in the Mk. series). Mine is a 22/45 model. I bought it brand new for $219 two years ago. They still should be under $300 new. I can't find any .22lr, but if you can, it will still be the cheapest round available, and a brick can last a while.

I guess with limited funds I would buy a Heritage .22 revolver AND a Mosin Nagant. They can both be had for around $125-$150 each.

For $300, you could get a decent .22 LR pistol. Shop local pawn shops or gun stores to see if you can find a used Ruger Mk. II or Browning Buckmark. Mosins and other milsurp guns aren't a bad suggestion, though my personal opinion is that they have limited utility*.

However, you might also consider buying other gear that you could use that is very helpful to have. Here are a few suggestions:

- Electronic hearing protection
- Spotting scope
- Range bag(s)
- Spare parts/extra magazines for the guns you do have
- A couple of MGM auto-poppers
- Gun locker/gun safe for the guns you have and the ones you will get
- Membership at a local shooting range
- Ammo and/or reloading components
- Manually-operated clay pigeon thrower, couple cases of clays, and a couple boxes of ammo
- Entry-level reloading setup (you may need to set the money aside and add to it though)


Ok, none of that stuff is as fun as having a new gun, but in the long run it is money well spent.

*This is just my opinion, and I know, you think I'm wrong. Please don't derail the thread debating the finer points of collecting old military guns.

No problem! They're good targets. The only suggestion I would make would be to have some legs fabricated for it so the target is four or five inches off the ground. I had a local guy here do that, and he charged me around $10 or so.

Those targets do look great, but I cant use anything but paper at the range i have a membership to.

If you enjoy hunting deer, and if your jurisdiction allows hunting with a centerfire rifle, you might look for something like a used Marlin 336. .30-30 Winchester is a great deer caliber, not too hard on the shoulder, not too hard on the pocketbook, and a lever gun is a very classy way to get into centerfire shooting.

You could spend it on a concealed carry class or training. You'll almost certainly need to bring a handgun to the course though.
