i bought some black hills .223 55gr. fmj (red box)
i was looking at a round and notice it has the nato symbol
it also has LC stamped which i know the means it was made at lake city
but i thought they only made 5.56 m193 like federal xm193
but the box said it was .223
so i began to think maybe they were reloads
but the box said it was new ammunition
so im curious is it really 5.56 m193
or is it a type of lake city ammo in .223 that i havent heard of
also what is the muzzle velocity of black hills red box

I have some pretty old Black Hills .223, and there are 3 or 4 different head stamps per box. It's not the remaned stuff either, so if nothing else, you know Black Hills likes to vary the brass they use.

and 5.56 is .223 remington. I welcome you techno internet ammo gurus to argue, but my micrometer doesn't lie. m193 is identical external dementions to .223 remington. yes the brass may be thicker, and there are different reamers for the two, but it is the same bullet and case.

And if you shoot 5.56in a .223 chamber you might run into trouble. The two rounds are identical, but are loaded for different chamberings. Generally,5.56 is loaded too hot to use in a .223 chamber.

Black Hills red box is remanufactured ammunition (reload). Good ammo, but not new. Black Hills blue box is new production using all new components

Got that backwards MMCSRET. Red Box is new components... blue box is remanufactured.

Black Hills re-mand uses different head stamps all the time but still shoots better than most. The red box which is new should have BH match brass, or at least it is in the Red box 55 gr. soft points we order for duty ammo for the patrol rifles.

While I agree there are some barrels the 5.56 nato should not be used in I have yet to see a AR which would not digest either one with out problems.
