Hi everyone, I am new to the forum. I have been loading pistol, rifle and shotshells for 21 years using smokeless powder. Iam now looking for info on black powder blanks for the 45 colt to be used in cowboy mounted shooting, a co-worker of mine wants me to load up some blanks. I have found little info on the subject. the question I have is when loading blanks is it safe to load a half load of powder with just using a shot card on top? I have read that black powder loads must not have air space when using bullets. I know the flash holes have to be .140 to keep the primer from backing out when loading blanks.Any comments, suggestions. And thank's in advance...

I haven't looked as I don't do mounted but check out the SASS website and their rules for mounted. It might be there or else do a search on the mounted forum for info i.e. "loading blanks" etc. I believe the big shoots provide standard ammo for the participants using commercially loaded blanks. Check the SASS Mounted forum for what they are doing.

You can use an empty 9x19 case for powder measure. Use very fine priming powder (4fg) and 0.08" thick insulation cork for wads (2 wads are OK). If you want to secure the wads to the case use just two drops of CA glue at the edges - more glue will stiffen the wad thus making it more dangerous. Coarser powder needs more resistance to burn completely - when loading blanks with it it's like shooting fireworks - not authentic.

P.S. The above mentioned method of making blanks is good for reenactment, but not for cowboy mounted shooting.
