Does anyone know why a few retailers (Sportsman's Guide, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc.) state that they cannot ship Black Powder guns to Tennessee? Many companies do not list TN as a restricted state, but a select few do. I've been a cop here in Tennessee for 5 years and know most firearms related laws, but after much searching, I cannot find any laws that would restrict this. I've heard that Sportsman's Guide is paranoid about local restrictions and sometimes restricts sales of certain items to places they aren't even restricted. Anyone have any idea?

It might be that a certain city has a restriction. Here in Illinois where gun ownership is damn near outlawed in Chicago and some of the surrounding cities, most retailers will not ship to the state for fear that you might be in one of the "surrounding cities". I know your frustration, and my only advise is to search for a retailer that is willing to do his own research, and/or be confident in the fact that it is the buyers responsibility to know his own damn laws.

Pretty sure TN doesn't have any laws. In fact Tn law states that a black powder weapon is considered a "non-gun". They apparently have the issue not TN law. I have shipped several bp guns in past & checked into it.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not a problem with state law. RSVP2RIP might be onto something. I've heard that Knoxville has some restrictions on things as petty as slingshots. However, I can't recall hearing of any municipalities having local restrictions on any type of firearms. I sent Sportsman's Guide's customer service an email asking about it and I'll post their reply when I get it.

I`d say if there is a problem it would be rooted on Memphis .....Heck I grew up in Memphis and moved to Ms. and I won`t go there eaither .

I'm in Memphis. I can tell you that there are MANY problems rooted in Memphis, but no local weapons restrictions. And you were wise to get out! How far away did you get? Many of the Memphis problems are spreading to the suburbs in Desoto County, MS. I'm a Bartlett Officer and 90% of our arrests are Memphis residents.

I moved about 30 miles south of Memphis ...I figure I`m out of gun range when the shooting starts at night .No drive bys here .
Heck even coach Cal left and went to Ky....sure hated to see him go ..but don`t blame him a bit ..

Yep ...it is in deed gang and drug related ....Memphis holds the record these days for being #1 in the nation for violent crimes ...
Just a few nights ago the History channel had a special on it ....

Even here in the rain forest we are seeing gang shootings. Two or three a week it seems. Used to be confined to certain neighborhoods, but it's all over the city now.

2 or 3 a week here would be like a police action .......it`s a war zone every night ......watching the local news here is a sad thing ..
Growing up in the 50`s in Memphis was liveing Andy of Maberry ..the cops had time to stop and chat and have a cup of coffee and talk about the weather .......now days they go to work with bullet proof vest on and have to stay on their toes all day .....what a shame .
Kb4ns.......90% of the crime in my ...what I call border towns like OliveBranch and Southhaven ..Hornlake are Memphis residents .
My sisters boy is needing a job and wants to join the Memphis police dept ......I don`t think he understands the danger he was raised in Lakeland Tn. I`m doing all I can do to talk him out of it .

I don't blame you for trying to talk him out of it. Many of my good friends work for MPD and they are all bitter about their department and the morons running it. No doubt the majority of crimes in all the suburbs are thanks to Memphians. You couldn't pay me enough to work for Memphis. To have to deal with the extremely violent community with a serious lack of support from the brass isn't worth it. The worst part is that the courts here are handing out slaps on the wrist. You can take someone to 201 Poplar (the county jail) for their 18th violent felony and they get a $1000 bond and walk out the front door before you finish your arrest report! They the plea bargain their aggravated burglary charge down to theft of property and get probation (which they promptly violate with no serious consequences). Something's bad wrong here.

As far as the original topic, I got the following standard boiler plate text response from Sportsman's Guide:

"Thank you for your question on items that have mailing restrictions.

We have placed restrictions on specific items listed in our catalog and our web site.

Due to the various state, county and municipal laws that exist, we are not always able to comply with each individual guideline.

Not all of the restrictions are based on laws on the books, but could be a company decision based on other particular concerns. These may include whether the state has law suits pending involving gun owners and recent court decisions that may affect businesses like ours.

Also, it may be that the states' laws are so vague that they could be interpreted unfavorably in the event a court action was ever involved.

We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you."

In the '90s I worked for NAVAIR. One of the big vendors I worked with (aircraft avionics and electrical systems) was Thomas & Betts, who, circa '93, moved their corporate offices from New Jersey to Memphis.

The VP of Engineering told me that they initially sent 20 employees to Memphis to start up the new office...and in two weeks, 13 of them had been mugged.

I have always felt sorry for the folks that come to Memphis with a transfer from another city .....I tell ya not knowing that city will get you in some deep you know what !
There are times I have to go into the city for business but I will only go between the hours of 8am and 12 am .....thats the quiet time ...the bad guys sleep in .......I have a CC permit ...but I don`t want to have to deal with it ......I sure ain`t looking for trouble .

Eat early ......avoid the gun fights , and never sit with your back to the door .........just like code of the ol west.
