When Blackhawks were first introduced, they had the Micro rear sight on a flattop frame. Later, protective ears were added to prevent damage.

My question is, has anybody ever had a problem with rear sight damage on a flattop? Now that the 50th anniversary models are out, are their rear sights especially prone to damage? They certainly look durable.

Greeting's Nuclear Meltdown

I don't think the sights on the 50th Anniversary Blackhawks are any more
prone to damage than the other models with adjustable sights. Unless of
course, the weapon is dropped directly on the sights. My 50th Anniversary
Blackhawk shows NO signs of wear (or damage); but then again, I give all
of my wepons a lot of T-L-C~! ;) :D

IIRC. Damage wasn't the only reason the sights were changed. When the old rear sight was elevated enough it stood up above the cut in the frame, this caused it to wobble a little. The long range guys didn't like that, and of course if you dropped the gun, the sight was especially vulnerable in this position. The "ears" cured the wobble and provided protection when the sight was elevated. The change from the steel Micro sights to the aluminum one was a cost cutting decision.
