the fact is lots and lots of private sellers at gun shows are putting guns into the hands of criminals. That's just a fact, whether you care or not.

"lots and lots" from private sellers when compared to the fact that 80% of guns in crime are stolen and/or bought off the street market, or that close to 15% are actually purchased legally - well, it doesn't really seem like a lot.

Now might be a good time to cruise on over to Gun Facts and download their free Gun Facts PDF?

Check out page 33 (page 40 in the PDF)
Myth: Gun shows are supermarkets for criminals

Lots of references/footnotes-I would post page 33 here, but will honor copyright laws (if applicable).

Footnotes/references are always nice, and somewhat more believable/verifiable than "the fact is" ? :D

Bloomberg also sent a couple of legal secretaries from out of town to spend a day going through the shop’s records, reportedly with a list of serial numbers of guns used in N.Y. crimes. Wasn’t long before the owner saw a red flag-one of the serial numbers was a gun the shop owner was pretty darn sure the owner would not part with, and he doubted seriously said owner would ever go to N.Y. He called him up, wanted to know who he sold the gun to, and the owner didn’t know what the heck he was talking about-told ‘em the gun was on his hip, and neither he or the gun had ever been (or had any desire) to go near N.Y. The owner was at the shop in less than 30 minutes, “suspect” gun on hip.

Legal secretaries may know something about law, but seldom anything about guns, and this would be especially true of those from New York (if that's where they came from).

Anyway if they were simply matching serial numbers to a list, they could have easily been unaware that many manufacturers over time have used the same numbers, and sometimes have done so on different models within their own lines.

I am aware of a number of incidents were a particular gun was checked against a database and determined to be stolen, when the fact was that the "stolen" gun was an entirely different make and model. The odds go way up if the number was entered into the database without including a letter(s) prefix or suffix.

Bloomberg himself knows nothing. When ask, he couldn't even identify the make and model of pistol used by the NYCPD.

Bloomberg...4 words to describe him & his ilk..

Liar

Cheat

Fraud

Carpetbagger (I grew up in the South, so I can say that)
