(CBS) JERSEY CITY, N.J. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a coalition of 214 mayors are using the Virginia Tech massacre to pressure Congress to give local cops the information they need to trace illegal guns used in crimes.

CBS 2 has also learned that they're also launching a TV ad campaign starting Sunday.

"We're fighting criminals and illegal guns. Why is Congress fighting us?" Bloomberg said Wednesday.

The ads will start running in four days in New York, Washington and the congressional districts of key gun advocates.

"I don’t want my officers to have their hands tied when it comes to having to deal with the issue of illegal guns for criminals," Bloomberg said.

The ads are funded by Bloomberg, who said he will personally spend whatever it takes to stop a bill that would allow the feds to withhold crucial information on illegal guns needed by local cops.

"In terms of how much money to spend I don't know," Bloomberg said. "The last time I was on a campaign I spent $85 million."

Bloomberg said the Virginia Tech massacre that resulted in 33 deaths should get everyone behind his illegal gun crusade.

"Every day 30 Americans are murdered," he said. "If one day is cause for you to think, what about 365 days?"

Carole Stiller is with the Million Mom March, a group with members who have lost loved ones to gun violence. She said she doesn’t think the Virginia Tech shooter should have had the right to get a gun.

"Because he wanted it and it was his right to have it," Stiller said. "Well, it's our right and it was the 32 other people's rights to not have someone come on campus and shoot them."

The Virginia Tech shooting also reverberated in the presidential race. Trying to woo conservatives, the formerly anti-gun Rudy Giuliani said he supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

But Democrats Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama steered clear of the issue, saying only that the massacre was a tragedy.

Ummm , if the people on campus had been able to exert their 2A rights maybe the 32 victims rights to not get shot might have been protected? The "I think" and "I feel" crowd apparently don't get that their personal opinions are fine for THEIR personal life , but rights are for everybody , including their right to spew how they "feel" . Wonder how they would "feel" or what they would "think" if restrictions were put on free speech like, background checks, permits, word capacity ( no high capacity speeches or articles) , fingerprints-photo ID- background check-training to be able to speak publicly .

oK , enough of that . What I want to know is , what does trace data have to do with solving crime? Guns can already be traced all the way back to original FFL so what is trace data suppose to do ?

The trace data doesn't have anything to do with solving crime in the traditional sense - as you noted, guns can already be traced back to the original FFL.

Bloomberg wants trace data available so he can use civil lawsuits (along with their lower burden of proof) to enforce the law. He used the same tactic with the strawman buy schemes. He uses the financial power of NYC to take regular folk to court; nobody has the resources to fight NYC, so they have to give in. He needs the trace data information so he can sue anyone in civil court that ever touched a gun used in a crime.

In my opinion, this is a real shame. If you want to enforce the law, do it criminal court. There is a reason why criminal cases have a "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard whereas civil cases us a "more likely than not" standard. It is just plain wrong to use the "more likely than not" standard on criminal type cases.

Provide data to fuel civil lawsuits against law abiding gun dealers and gun manufacturers to drive them out of business... the "police need it" line is 100% fiction. If the police have a gun they need to trace, the ATF will happily trace it for them. Bloomberg is a liar, plain and simple. He's made it his crusade to eliminate lawful gun ownership and will sink to any low in the process of accomplishing his agenda. He is one of the rapid ones that's even extremely critical of his police force's use of firearms... I seriosuly think he'd rather that they didn't have guns either.

I think when his ads start showing everyone should write to the stations that run them and ask them to stop. I imagine a mass letter writing campaign against the ads trying to politicize the VT massacre might have some effect.
