Boar Knife

If you were going on the redneck adventure of a lifetime, namely boar hunting armed only with a knife.. what would you use?

I think my Cold Steel Tanto is tough enough and sharp enough, but i'm not sure the blade is long enough.

Is a bagwell bowie tough enough?

http://www.lonesomepineknives.com/battlebowie.htm I've had aquaintances use the Larry Harley Battle Bowie, the Camillus "Kabar", Lightfoot Zambezi http://www.lightfootknives.com/wildboar.html, and the Cold Steel Trailmaster as well to take boar. Dogs were used on all of these hunts.

I wouldn't consider this a "redneck" fantasy. Diving in on a 100+ lb wild animal that is equiped with tusks that can rip you bone deep from knee to groin is the most basic form of hunting with the greatest risks possible to the hunter.

Be certain that you're dealing with a knife that has the edge geometry to slice through a 13 in. length of heavy leather in one push.

This is, or used to be a big local sport in Hawaii, where it was known as "Stick da Pig".

Favorite tools were high grade Bowie and Arkansas Toothpick knives.

In a case like this, I'd choose knives VEEERRRRRYYYYYY carefully.

Got offered a pig hunt when on Owahu and up at Harleys and didn't have the nerve to accept either offer. My buddy in Hawaii explained it'd be a feral pig that would only be ~120 lbs and that his dogs would do all the real work yeah right. Of course the running a couple of miles through bush, up hill, was what convinced be to take a pass (honestly). I didn't give a second thought to turning down the Harley hunt since those boar were russians and were going to be at least 300 lbs.

Hso, you didn't miss anything on the pig hunt on Oahu. My buddies and me used to go up on the Pali all the time with our bows pighunting. Navigating through hau bush is not fun! :banghead:

I hunt pigs all the time.

My favorite weapon is the PRAR.

And yes, a lot of these California sheriffs qualify for that term.

i'll go w/ a Camillus BK7 or a #9, a chris reeves one piece skinner (big spade type blade or a wilson 1911 5". all have a single peice blade and handle. the last thing you want is a blade snapping off between a couple of ribs. there you stand w/ handle in habd and mean pork still breathin'.
not much trouble around here. pigs only get up to around 300 pounds.

If I had to...
Would use my pre WWI American made Remington bowie style which has spent more time in combat than some countries.l

However...
Not going to willingly take a knife to a tusk fight.

Back in 1980 I did a hunt with Calvin Pacheco in Hawaii and killed 2 pigs with a Gerber Mk II. Not the best choice, but it did the job. Mind you, those were small pigs, not over 100 lbs. for the pair. Somewhat disappointing. Still and all, it was quite an experience and I have no regrets.

My cold steel tanto has a 5.5 inch blade and while it's skinned and dressed many an elk deer and antelope, I don't think the blade is long enough.

Ditto for my Bushman, though I think that would be a fitting knife to use.

Just to clarify.. redneck sports include, shooting fish, shooting road signs and fishing with dynamite, tasks that sure are fun but inherintly dangerous and leaves your mother saying, "what the hell were you thinking, boy?"

I'm originally from WVa, the Hatfield side of the Tug River and have been known to shoot fish. I just MIGHT be crazy enough to hunt a pig with nothing but some dogs and a knife.

Wouldn't use a Bushman, even if the blade were a couple inches longer. Byron broke one, throwing it. (Yeah, I know throwing a knife is hard use, but still...)

"suicidal fantasy"? If you'll read my earlier post you'll see that it ain't fantasy. The 3 knives cited as having been used to take boar were listed because they were used by people I personally know having used them to "sticka da pig" . 2 of the pigs came in at over 300 lbs each. The smaller was over 100 lbs. None of them were taken from horseback, although all of them were taken with the aid of dogs.

I think I might give my eye teeth for the opportunity to hunt pig/boar with a blade. That's a very manly thing to do and I'm trying to be a manly man. The way I see it, it's no different than shooting something like the IDPA Qualifier to see where you rank as a shooter.

Let me have two short, Zulu-type spears and a rawhide buckler to start. I'll work my way up to nothing more than a bowie knife and intestinal fortitude in a year or two.

Where's there pork in SC? Who knows how to do this?

I have the "Helles Belle" and would trust it with my life, which hunting pigs with it one would have to! It is a great piercer, long blade, and built well.
