Did my weekly hog hunt today. Wanted to take another hog with patched round ball. Took my trusty scoped .54 caliber TC Fire Hawk. At about 7:30 pm a boar weighing 150-160 pounds came into view about 80 yards away. Put the crosshairs on the ear. Boar went down at the shot, flopped for about 30 seconds and lay still.

Gun: .54 caliber TC Fire Hawk
Powder: 100 grains of Black MZ
Primer: #11 cap
Projo: .530 Round ball w/drill cloth patch
Twist: 1/38"

The meat does not have a taint to it? When we raised hogs we never ate boars because of the off flavor imparted into the meat which was always said to be from the testes, which is why we castrated early. The best eating, in my experience, was from a first litter sow. Once she weened her babies we stuck her in with the pigs we were feeding to sell so she could put on a little weight. The bacon, hams, and pork chops had good flavor and size without being overly fatty. Probably hard to shoot one in the wilds in that condition though.

i've eaten meat from dozens of wild boar hogs. Meat from wild boars is not tainted. Sometimes it is tough. It's possible that a mature recently released boar hog could have "boar taint".

My Dad ran the WV Dep't of Agriculture hog farm for many years. The big old boars were sold to the "pepperoni man". "Boar taint" is found in about 20 percent of domestic boars. "Boar taint" is not found in wild hogs. Wild hogs have hard scrabble lives.

IME: Bad tasting wild hog meat is rotten or contaminated hog meat. When the temperature high it is imperative the meat be cooled ASAP. After about four hours at 80 F the meats begins to go bad.
