Is there such a thing currently in production? I've checked several of the big-name maufacturer's websites and have come close, but the stainless steel narrows the field.

Also, if not currently in production, then recently in production. Would also prefer the barrel to be floated.

I'm looking for a good target rifle for plinking at the range, FYI.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

The only one I can think of that might come close is Cooper's Jackson Squirrel rifle.....not sure if a person could order it with a bull barrel, might try giving them a call.

Thanks guys. I forgot to include "non-thumbhole" in my specs earlier. :D

Looks like the Ruger is the closest to what I'm looking for. I like Ruger's, but I'm not real crazy about the looks of the laminate though.

I may settle for a blued finish and open up my options.

Thanks again.

If you can get along without stainless, CZ. The CZs pretty much rules around here, with Savage and Marlin duking it out for second place. Our club runs CMP rimfire sporter match shooting and our guys want what gets them hits.

The 452 Varmint has the heaviest barrel in the lineup. Or a 453 if you like the single set trigger.

Kimber 82C SS Varmit if you can find one, or the Kimber SVT if you can deal with the laminate stock. My Kimber 22 is competitive with full blown target rifles and just this weekend held her own against a 40x, a Win52, and others. She took one match and placed in 2 others, pretty darn respecable for a 7lb squirrell rifle.

or... you can buy something and have it work out of the box without jacking around replacing the barrel or stock..

remington 504 T.

the 504 standard model had a lot of issues (apaprently), but the 504T uses a Shilen barrel, and wasn't subject to those issue.

regular stock... bolt action... bull barrel... solid shooter..

CZ453 varmit would be another good choice.

I have never really heard of outstanding accuracy from rugers...I know they are good guns, and shoot well.. but you never seem to hear about any tackdrivers

Yeah I'm really not much on "modding out" my guns for some reason. Prefer to keep them factory configured, save optics.

I am leaning toward the CZ 453 Varmint because of the regular wood stock (non-laminate) and it appears to be a bit cheaper than the Remy. It also has all of the features I want except stainless steel.

Is $500 about right for a new CZ 453 Varmint? There is one on gunbroker for $619 Buy It Now.

personally..>I would buy the CZ.

I bought a 452 17HMR and have been very happy with it. I have handled a 504T at the gun shop for a few months and just can't bring myself to buy it.

one of the things I don't care for on the 504 is the wimpy looking bolt. it works.... but the bolt on the CZ is like a mini mauser bolt... it looks and feels like a real rifle.
