Do people know some good books that are of a simualr type to either Nightcrawlers or Correia? I have read most of the Tom Clancy novels and i wish their were some spin offs of without remorse but their arent as far as I know off. I am looking for books like this to enjoy when I have the time. I am sorta tired of reading non fiction books about the current war as well as vietnam so I am looking for modern novels with gunplay and relatively good gun talk that wont make me angry when information is completely inaccurate. Anybody know anything worth reading. I apologize to any mods i know this truly isnt about guns but I thought i may get some good authors from people who know what they are talking about.
For a good zombie novel I recommend World War Z and The complete Zombie survival guide both are by max brooks and their fairly intresting in my opinion.
I also apologize to you Correia since i probably butchered the spelling of your name.

Our very own Moderator, Stephen A. Camp, has written what he dubs as 'a Novel of Revenge'. The title is 'Paid In Full'.

If you're very fortunate, you may be plesantly surprised to notice that some of the qualities of the characters involved in the tale may be a bit more than passing familiar to people that you have known in the past.

You can order a copy through his website. I liked it enough to buy additional copies for gifts.

salty.

You spelled it right. :)

As for writing like me and NC, I'm flattered that you enjoyed it that much.

Well, this will be coming soon:

About two months off now.

Which was the THR member written story with the folks in the subdivision that banded together for protection and resources when an EMP or similar device knocked out all electricity for a long extended period of time?

Spoiler below...

There was another group of folks at a fortified encampment that tried to recuit a few folks from the subdivision. Ultimately that encampment was overthown by the bad guys. Finally, the bad guys and the subdivision have at it.

The above is a very cursory and poorly written summary of the story. The actual story is AWESOME! I would very much enjoy reading it again. After reading that story its hard to think of another that would come close. Any specific recommendations on what to read next?

How about a little preview?

As I pondered this, the arguing and shouting continued. I felt my right eye begin to twitch, and I’d had about enough. **** it, I thought. It was time to assert my authority and lay all of my cards on the table. I put my glasses back on and gritted my teeth.

I stood so quickly that I sent my chair clattering behind me. With my left arm, I swept the mess of bottles, cans, and ashtrays off of the table, sending them crashing to the floor. With my right hand, I drew my SRK fighting knife from its sheath and slammed it into the table in front of me. Drawing back to my full height, I drew my Smith & Wesson 629 .44 Magnum revolver from the holster on my left hip, and let it hang in my hand, muzzle pointing towards the floor.

“EVERYBODY SHUT THE **** UP!” I screamed. You could’ve heard a pin drop as everyone stared at me wide-eyed. Only Hawk seemed unfazed.

“Listen mother****er, you can’t threaten…” Hudson began, standing up. He instantly fell silent when I leveled the big .44 at his chest. “Hey, just take it easy, Hopper,” he said in much calmer tones.

“Quiet,” I said. “Sit the **** down.” He did so, and I lowered my weapon. “Now all of you listen to me. You want to know why I’m in charge? Because I’m the only one that has access to Decker’s accounts, where our money is deposited. Anything happens to me, none of you get paid.”

“What?” Jeff asked. Corwin coughed loudly.

“That’s right,” I continued. “Decker gave me his account numbers months ago.”

“Why you? Why wouldn’t he give them to Hawk?”

“Because I’m who y’all would’ve assumed had ‘em,” Hawk said at last. “Decker always had a paranoid streak in ‘im. He changed the account numbers and told Hopper here the new ones. If anybody would’ve made a move on me, he’d’ve had a heads-up that some **** was goin’ down without risking the numbers bein’ compromised. He trusted Hopper.”

“Well **** me,” Hudson said.

“You guys can do whatever the **** you want,” Triana said. “I’ve had it. I’m ****in’ done.”

“You’re free to go,” I told her flatly. "You will of course forfeit your share of the money.”

“WHAT?” she gasped.

“You know the rules, Triana,” I said. “Any man…or woman…that bails before the contract is completed forfeits his share of the fee.”

“I…” She finally fell silent, and sat back down.

“We have one more mission to complete,” I continued. “Despite our casualties, we’ve completed every single one of our objectives. The client is happy. I have the complete mission dossier, and have looked it over. Our last target is one of Federov’s associates, a gun runner in French Guiana. We eliminate him and destroy his warehouses and we’ll effectively shut down his entire operation. After that’s accomplished, the client will pay us the entire fee.”

“What’s the fee?” Hudson asked.

“Fifteen million Euros,” I said steadily, causing eyes to grow wide. “Comes to about nineteen million, four hundred thousand dollars. Originally we were all to get equal shares, except Decker, who as SWITCHBLADE 6 got a double share. I’m not taking a double share, and Decker’s share of the money will be divided up equally between us. That comes to about three-point-two-three million dollars for each of us. So if anyone wants to bail, feel free. Me, I’m going to see this ****ing job through to the end, get my money, and go the hell home.

“Listen guys,” I said, my voice softening. “It’s been rough. Christ…we ****ed up bad on that last one. Client doesn’t care, but I do. Doesn’t change anything, though. We can either finish the job and get paid or we can walk away and we don’t get ****. So what’s the word?”

“I’m with the kid,” Hawk said, puffing on his cigar.

“I’m in,” Corwin managed from his bunk. “As much as I can be, I mean.”

“Me too,” Jeff said.

“Fine, I’m in…Boss,” Hudson said. We all looked at Triana.

“**** it, whatever, let’s just get it over with.”

So that’s how it was. I was twenty-one years old and the commander of one of the deadliest groups of mercenaries in the world. It was a far cry from the awkward high school kid I’d been just three years before. At that moment, I could hardly even remember what such a mundane existence was like.

"After his father died in 1955, Bob Lee joined the U.S. Marines, forging a successful career as a Marine Sniper. Bob Lee served three tours in Vietnam, working with Special Operations, and earned the nickname 'Bob the Nailer' for his uncanny ability with a rifle. Despite official counts crediting him with 87 combat kills, in reality he killed over 300 men in combat, with his most notable success being an engagement with a battalion of the North Vietnamese Army who were closing on a lightly defended Special Forces Base. Bob Lee and his spotter, Lance Corporal Donny Fenn, succeeded in delaying the battalion for two days until air support could arrive, and during the engagement Bob Lee killed in excess of 80 enemy troops, only stopping when his ammunition ran out."

Does anybody know which Stephen Hunter book this came from. I ve heard about it and want to read it and dont know which book in the series this applies to.

Thank you nightcrawler i appreciatted the glimpse of your trilogy and i want you to know this wasnt made as a desperate ploy to release some of your novel to us early.

Correia when you book comes out i will surely read it. I am going to england in may and since the flight is forever long i want to bring a few books along to read.

I don't mind giving the previews. I like showing you guys what's in store. Most of the sneak peeks I've given have been from the flashback segments.

I made an error in the above on, though. Hopper was 20 years old at that time, not 21.

Too young? Funny when you think about it. Alexander the Great had conquered half the known world by age 21...

And Larry is into teasing adult men who never get all the toys they want or think they need.
Larry post a new thread or email everyone on the board when it is ready to ship.

I've actually had a new delay pop up on this project. But in a good way. A big publisher has contacted me and asked for a chance to read it. This is a publisher that I didn't make it through their slush pile a year ago, but it was forwarded to them by a THR member who "knows people" and told them that they would be stupid not to pick me up. :)

So I'll see how that goes first. I would much rather be published by a pulisher that will get my stuff out there in stores everywhere, than do it myself, and be limited to the people I can reach by the internet and word of mouth.

Strangely enough, I actually had everything sitting on my desk, in an envelope, addressed and everything, ready to go to the self-publishers when I was contacted.

But if I get rejected again, like I have for the last two years, then I'll drop this envelope in the mail and then we'll have books in two months.

Hi everone. I'm a brand new member. I have to agree Stephen Hunter is a good read. If you have a secondhand book store you might check out Donald Hamilton's " Mathew Helm" series. Plenty of action and good plots. Hamilton knew about guns too. There was a movie made starring Dean Martin as Matt Helm and it was terrible. No connection at all with the character in the books.

I, too, must plug my own books. If you're willing to try science fiction, I believe you will be pleased with the action in my books. The first book is mostly character and plot development, but there are action sequences in the middle and end. The second book is pure action/adventure.

If you like the idea of a group of humans taking on alien races with conventional firearms (Springfield M1A, M4, etc), not so conventional firearms (GAU 8/A Avenger, GAU 19/A), and eventually plasma cannons and laser banks, I think you will like my work.

Here is a short review of the first book from Amazon:

An intrepid group of 20 somethings finds an object from outer space that wants them to build a spaceship and who are they to argue with destiny? The result is Reckless Faith, a book about people who are given a unique opportuntiy and go after it no matter what the cost. On the way, they run afoul of several government agencies and action ensues.

Kantrowitz's characters are rough and tumble and not afraid to get their hands dirty. The book is a western set in modern times. Expect lots of bourbon and bullets.

If fast-paced sci-fi/action reads are your thing this book is a must have.

Reckless Faith

The Tarantula Nebula

My attempt was to make my books as cerebral as possible, with a solid grounding in actual astronomy and theoretical physics, while at the same time crafting a compelling story with believable characters and well-paced, technically-accurate action sequences.
