Bore condition in 100 ATR (VIDEO)

My brother-in-law is willing to give me a deal on a 30-06 Mossberg 100 ATR.

I know there was some rust on the gun at one point so I decided to put a bore scope in. It seems rather rough and I'm wondering if anyone has opinion about what is going on inside the bore?

It looks to me as if the rust was inside the bore as well, then cleaned out and used.

Condensation on a coated or oiled surface will make channels like that as the water finds a spot to reach the metal and then migrates as it corrodes a canyon under the surface treatment.

How good a “deal” is it? It might shoot okay, it might foul badly or it might need a new barrel.
That as an inexpensive hunting rifle it may shoot acceptably and last many years.

But, I wouldn’t buy it, that which starts cheap usually ends expensively, but I have a 30-06. And a high level of Obsession, it would bug me.

I also wouldn’t buy it just because of my brother in law. Mine is a doofus, and would try to pawn a rusted bore off on me. All while spinning a tale of high tech bore coatings making it ultra accurate.

His junk magically turns into competition rigs or highly sentimental historical pieces when it comes time for sale, usually in pieces…

Yeah the texture of the bore was pretty concerning.

It would have been a pretty good deal but I am thinking I should just leave it alone. Even if it did shoot satisfactory.

You'd be doing him a favor if you bought it.

It is a low end gun to begin with - new ones sell for under $300 - so I wouldn't expect nor attempt to make it into a benchrest competition rig. Honestly the barrel is better than most milsurp I've purchased and will likely shoot fine. Fire a couple groups and see where they land. If it makes a nice tight cluster it's good to go.

Yeah I just don't want to get into a situation where all the texture requires more frequent cleaning or it degrades quickly. If I go and shoot and I get one good group I might be tricked.

It comes with a nice case but heck, if I'm going to spend good money I might as well put it into an Axis or Ruger American and get a shiny new one.

That might just be metal fouling.
Tell him to let you test drive it for a couple of months, shoot and clean and see what it does.

That looks like fouling, not pits. Try giving it a good scrub with a boar brush and look again. Might be fine. jmo

Yeah I thought about that but he barely shot it. Yet I do not know what to expect to see since I only recently got the borescope.

Those are not expensive guns and the button rifling can be a pretty much like that from new. Personally for a decent discount from new I wouldn't worry so much that it doesn't have a nice smooth bore. I have seen worse on new guns. I would not consider that as a bad bore for the price of those guns and I bet it will shoot OK and the more you shoot the smoother it will get. You can also fire lap the bore if you want to hurry the smoothing process.
Or hand lap it is another option. If the price is right I would buy it.

My experience with that type of video is. It's fouling that comes out with CLR, then copper remover. Repeat until clean.
Rust shows up as more circular spots.

Agree. It is more like fouling, dried lubricant, grease if in storage for a long time. Clean it up first. I like ATR! top open receiver, blind staggered feed box feeder, no mag to mess with, like the good old Savage. Why they don't make it anymore.

I really hate to say I agree. I'd like to argue, but I simply, simply can't as I'd be a hypocrite. That's how I came across my only shotgun.
