Hey all, Just wondering but what are bore mops for? I have one for my pistols but I just don't know what to use it for? Do you guys use it? when and how do you use it? Yea i know i sounds like a stupid question but I am curious.

When you have finished cleaning, they are great for applying a nice even coat of oil in the bore.........(easy on the oil)

should you apply oil directly on the mop? ir wrap a patch around it?

I put the oil, or RIG grease, on the mop and then store it in a baggie or the plastic tube it came in. But I only use them on clean guns.

I do wrap a patch around a brush when I'm cleaning a shotgun. It holds the cleaner better and pushes the crud out quicker.

+1

I keep .22, .38 & .45 mops with R.I.G. on them, and a short pistol rod in a zip lock bag with a R.I.G.-RAG in the gun room.

I use them to swab out carry guns that get lint & mosture in the bore and chambers when CCW'd. Also give the safe queens a swab every time I get a Round Tuit.

But that's the only thing I use them for.
Patches, jags, & brushes for all cleaning.

+1 for me too, except I use Mili-Tec as the lube., I store it in a small plastic zip-lock bag.plastic. I apply it fairly liberally, and then put a small patch over the mop and wipe it down..

Bore Mops are also great for applying products like Dyna-Bore Coat, which we install on guns and sell in kit forms at ExtremeGunCare. Once a gun is protected with Dyna-Bore Coat, usually a Bore Mop is the only thing needed to clean the bore. I utilize bore mops probably the most in cleaning. We also suggest using quality bore mops like ProShot Products, Made In The USA and we carry!

Mr. Matt

Listen to what the other contributors have told you, regarding bore mops---they are all correct. Here is a professional tip:

When the mop gets really yucky from lots of use, here is the way to clean them. Buy a cheap ultra-sonic jewelery or denture cleaner from wally world, walgreens, cvs, or a local garage sale. Fill the cleaning chamber with about a half-inch of undiluted "simple green" cleaner. Drop mops in & turn on hi speed. Leave for about 5 minutes. Take out & rinse with clean water. Chuck the wet mop in your drill & spin really fast for a few minutes to sling out excessive water. Use a hair dryer to finish the process. Ta-da--the mop is clean & ready to be lightly re-oiled for future use. Git-er-done !!!!

I religiously use mine to clean my firearms. I run a mop soaked in Hopps #9 down the barrel several times, set the barrel aside for a few minutes to let the Hopps soak into the barrel fouling. Then take the mop and use it to get into the areas on the slide and frame that are hard to get to. It works quite well for this. I then run a bore brush down the barrel several times. YEMV, but this works quite well for me.

Wow thank you guys for allot of those tips, also GURU1911 How would you clean a bronze bore brush?

Matt,

Dip in into a bottle of Hoppes and let it soak a minute or so, than take out and put a rag around it to take Hoppes off, there you are!

Cleaning bore brushes

Use the same technique i advised for cleaning the mop, except this time drop the brush in the ultrasonic cleaner & crank 'er up for a few minutes. Cleaning solutions like "simple green, mean green, or orange blast" are excellent for many uses on the bench. Advantages:
1. Non-toxic
2. Non-flammable
3. No noxious fumes
4. Biodegradable---pour on the ground--no disposal hassles.
5. Gentle on the skin----spray some on your hands, lather, & rinse.
6. Can be pre-diluted to any strength required.

Btw: Bought an old ultrasonic denture cleaner at a garage sale for $0.25 cents. It lasted 10 years & made me more than $1000 in pure profit cleaning parts in my shop. My newest & most powerful cost me a whopping $2.00 & it is going on it's third year !!! Ya'll get you one too for your own shop----great for cleaning reloading dies !!!!!!!!

Hmm I wonder how a denture cleaner would work on a thorough cleaning of a bolt....

Bolt cleaning

matt: If you can completely strip the bolt assembly & can find a cleaner with a tub large enough, the ultra-sonic would do a fabulous job cleaning the bolt.

Ham: Quit tossing your grungy brushes into the neighbors yard. The home owners association might write you a violation of code for being a "gun-nut"---lol---just messing with you !!!!!!

gentlemen: Homemade "big-honking" ultrasonic cleaner

1. Get a large plastic dishpan
2. Fill a couple of inches with "simple green" & h20 50/50 or stronger.
3. Set on top of the lid of your vibratory case cleaner.
4. Hold on to the pan & turn that sucker on high !!!!!!!!
5. Suggestion---an old hand held vibrating sander held against the side of the dishpan might also work.

Hey, ya'll let me know if my wacky idea works for you guys.

I just tried that with a Makita finish grinder. It is loud annoying but shook it well thanks for the tip.

MATT:

Omg---thank you for listening to old folks !!!!

Your reply to my email made me laugh when you said "hey it works, but dang it is loud & noisy"----next time put on your earmuffs / earplugs and kick 'er in gear---i know my crazy suggestions work; the problem is convincing others to try them.

Attention fellow shooters: Matt has confirmed that "guru1911"
home-brew cheap ultrasonic cleaner works !!! Oooo0rah matt

Haha yes, well being 15 i want to learn as much as possible, its these tricks and tips that can really help you in the long run...

MATT:

You are a very wise young man for having that mental attitude. That is the way life experiences & knowledge are passed on to the next generation. The problem is that lots of 15 year old have a brain like concrete & think they already know everything there is to know. But in your case, you are the exception.

Myself, mr. Ham, & a bunch of other folks on this forum are willing & able to teach you---are you willing to receive the information with a positive attitude ???? If you are, then welcome to the fraternity of shooters, reloaders, & gunsmiths all across this nation & the free countries on the rest of planet earth. Matt, i am adding your contact info to my inner circle of forum "brothers in arms"

please contact me for any gun-related issues & i will help you to the best of my ability---that is my pledge to you.

Thank you very much. And yes i am more than willing to receive info with a positive attitude, but i really appreciate your help.

Training mr. Ham

Matt: If you & i start leaning really hard on mr. Ham, do you think we can retrain him to quit tossing greasy bore mops & worn out bore brushes into his neighbors yard ????

Personally i think this mop & brush thing can be put to bed finally. Just my opinion !!!

Matt,

You are something else Lad! You remind me of my grandfather, he'd cobble some of the dangdest things together, and make them work! Like the time he didn't have a front sight on his .22 rifle. Gramps cut a penny in 1/2, brazed it onto the barrel, then proceeded to shoot and file the penny down, shoot some more, until he could hit a spot the size of a nickel at 25 yds...... sometime after that, he'd shot himself a nice 4 point mule deer buck with it, at about 50 yds. So, don't do any of that, but keep up with the other items that work! Glad your bolt is clean now.
