I went to the Dixie Gun and Knife Show this weekend in Raleigh and bought a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag with a 4" barrel. As soon as I picked it up and felt the heft of this revolver, I instantly fell in love with it. It is a beautiful and solid piece of firearm machinery, exactly what I wanted in 44 mag.

My only issue with it is that I don't like the exposed backstrap in the grip and would like to swap it out with a Hogue or Pach grip that has a wrap around the backstrap. It's just a personal preference, but in this caliber I like grips that bury the backstrap with some extra rubber.

Any suggestions from Redhawk owners out there? Thanks in advance!

I had a 7.5" at one time.....had Pachs.....loved it....would love to know what you think once you get the new grips on yours...I am wanting a 4" and feel the same way about the exposed backstrap.

Thanks, Vic...I will certainly report back when (if?) I find the grip I'm looking for. The Hogue website lists three rubber grips but they all appear to leave to the backstrap exposed...hmm...

I have a 5.5" Redhawk in .41 & .44 Mag. Love em. :)

Unlike some, I really like shooting them with the wood grips they came with.

Like these Pachmayrs (I'm guessing these are their Presentation grips):

I actually don't care for these stocks, but they work okay; I prefer wood stocks, but I'm not sure I'd like the tiny stocks that came on these guns from the factory. But maybe they'd be nice with a Tyler-T grip. Or perhaps some big Hogues without the finger grooves would work for me.

Look up the thread I posted just the other day about my frustration with the grips on this gun. I finally got the info I needed to change mine but save yourself some headache and research. The new 4inch comes with a different grip locator. So you will have to call ruger or order a standard redhawk grip locator. Then any grip will fit on the 4incher.

again save yourself some frustration and lookup the thread.

Thanks, Jad and Revolver. It was good to know about the different grip locator...what a difference a $3 part can make! I will certainly be changing the current grips once I get the new locator; the finger grooves on the stock grip don't really fit my hand and the backstrap is exposed. I like the Decelerator Presentation grips, so I may get those. Thanks for the help!

The recoil is most certainly there, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

The grips on mine pictured above fit okay, but I'd like to put some large wood stocks on with no finger grooves. I like wood stocks on my .357 686 better than any rubber grip, so I assume the same would be true with the Redhawk.

I agree it seems with smiths also Hogue usually doesn't put grip around backstrap were Pachmeyer does. I agree cover that thing up. Great pic. I know alot say 44 to much but I'm a believer in hit them and hit them hard. Can you imagine being on the recieveing end of that. You wouldn't need a follow up shot. Of course I'm also a recoil junkie.

Good Morning Gents. This is my first post and am looking forward to read all about the goodies you fellas have.

9mm+, I have the pacs. on my redhawk 7.5 and love them. he stock grips felt to small for my hand.

Walker944, I'm wondering what brand of factory ammo you are shooting out of hat flame thrower of yours. lol.. I hope all you folks have a great holiday coming up.

Welcome to the board Walter64. If I recall correctly it is Remington 240 gr. green/white box.

Interesting side story to the pic. I had just met my son-in-law the previous day. My daughter moved to England several years ago to live with my Ex (long story). While there she met and married a Brit. They've been married about a yr and a half and came to visit at the end of Sep this year. Of course, being from England, he had never fired a 'real' gun. And, being from Texas, I have plenty of them. He was very interested, so off to the gun range we went. Before heading out the door, I grabbed an AK-47, Ruger Redhawk, Hi-Point 995, and something in a 9mm pistol. He had a blast...literally!!! He shot everything like a natural. I was really impressed. I got a really nice email from him after they got back to England saying that the trip to the gun range was his favorite part of the entire two week trip. He said that was a "Real Texas experience".
I think he'll do just fine as a son-in-law. :)

Walkalong, nice picture of the .41. I started "collecting" them when it wasn't cool, now they fetch big dollars.

Hey I "bought" a 5 1/2 today! I used quotations because as usual I got delayed for 3 days. Every time, I swear... Well I have been looking for one for a few months now and I have a feeling I am going to be extremely happy come Friday.
