I get a call from my roommate this morning. "Would you be interested in buying a brand-new Savage bolt in 7mm mag, for $75?"
Uh, yes.
Somehow, he found out that our local Wal-Mart had these two older-model Savages that were layaways, but the buyers stopped paying on them. They'd been sitting in the gun room, unsold, for God knows how long, long enough for them to be marked down to $75. There was a .243 in addition to the 7mm I bought. My roommate bought the .243- he's been wanting a Savage to rebarrel.
As for me, I got the deer rifle I'd been wanting to get for a while- not exactly what I wanted (I was leaning heavily towards .270), but I'll probably keep it. It's a Savage 110FXP3 combo, blind magazine, with a cheapo Simmons 8-point 3-9x40 on top. To top it all off, I also had a $50 Wally World gift card, so I walked out with this rifle having invested precisely $30.25 of my own money. Niice.
I did learn that the buying process at Wal-Mart is as bad as everyone says. "Charlie Foxtrot" doesn't begin to describe the circus it took to approve this purchase. But it was worth it to me.
