I have several handguns, never owned a rifle. Bought a new AK because of it's reputation for reliability... and the effectiveness of the round... before they try to prevent me from buying one.

I bought a Lancaster Arms AK47.

I am a noob in the rifle community. I would like to add a collapsabile bipod that will accomodate a 30 rd magazine.

Please Help!

can you tell us what receiver its built on? I've heard that lancaster has been unable to acquire any NDS receivers and to fill orders, they have been using inferior ITM ( not heat treated correctly) receivers.

Rogerjames, Lancaster builds a nice AK. Hopefully you were spared from having to deal with their customer service and got it from a vendor like Atlantic.

Gelgoog, I thought Lancaster built their own receivers. Where did you hear that NDS supplied them?

A friend received one in December. It's on a NDS-3. At one time Atalantic Firearms even listed in their add that you'd be getting one with either a NDS receiver or something else (I don't recall).

I actually bought it from Atlantic. So far, Chet Durda from Lancaster has been very helpful. That being said... I received 2 personal phone calls from Blaine at Atlantic Firearms who volunteered to intervene on my behalf if I have any problems.

I am quite upset that I have to deal with any problems, especially because I paid so much... but so far... I am happy with the prompt response from both Lancaster and Atlantic. I will post the results when it is resolved

I'm with piratelooking@40 on this. The only reason to use a bipod is for varmint hunting or target shooting.

Also where are the pics? I want an AK.

It's easy to mount a Harris bipod on an AK. There's a few of different possible methods. All require removing the foregrip temporarily, and you can't have the cleaning rod on the gun with the first two methods (aka the cheap do-it-yourself methods).

Method #1: buy an Uncle Mike's machine screw swivel and get a 10/32 nut and 2 washers. Remove the foregrip retainer. You will see the hole in the bottom where the retaining screw goes. The first washer and nut go on the foregrip side of the cleaning rod hole (there's enough space for the washer to sit between the grip and the retainer, and the nut itself will sink in the cleaning rod hole). The second washer goes on the swivel, giving it surface area so it can sit on the front lip of the handguard retainer (the swivel head is too large for the groove). Quick and easy, and no permanent modifications to your gun. Downside: looks kind of ghetto.

Option #2: drill a hole in the bottom of the handguard, and tap it with an Uncle Mike's wood screw swivel. Once the hole is tapped, use a Dremel to cut off the extra length. The upside here is you get a permanent hard-mounted swivel, and only modified the foregrip. The downside is that you've put the hole straight through the cleaning rod hole, and now can't store your cleaning rod at all.

Option #3: Drill a hole at the front of the receiver, between the receiver end and front trunion, and mount your swivel there. If you cut it to the right length, you can still use the cleaning rod. This won't structurally harm your AK, and is really easy to do. It's probably one of the quickest methods. Downside: you've now got a permanent hole in your receiver.

Option #4: replace your handguard with one that has rails (such as the Tapco Fusion handguard). Get a rail-mounted bipod adapter. Attach it there. Alternatively, add a rail to the front of another handguard. Downside: the Tapco handguards generally look like crap. The Fusion looks okay, though. You can get rail covers to shield your hand for the part of the rails you don't want exposed.

I'm probably going to go for option #1 myself. I have a converted Saiga, and my AK is not set up to accept a cleaning rod; there's no place for it to screw in, and the supplied cleaning rod is longer than the barrel. Option #3 is also available because I already have a hole where the original handguard retaining screw went.

no, they just build their own on part sets. They have been buying their recievers from Nodak for a while, but because of the recent panic nodak can't keep up which is why Lancaster was so backlogged. So they began using ITM recievers much to the dismay of alot of customers recently. See the thing is, they are filling these orders for people who are backlogged for NDS recievers, they do not inform you about the change. If you are unsatisfied, they will take back the ITM gun and put you back on wait for an NDS gun, but yea...maybe if they reduced the price on the ITM then it wouldnt be so bad, but your getting charged a NDS price.

most of these companies use premade recievers because it speeds up the labor work. Only a few do their own...like ORF. its kind of like the AR world where only 2 or three companies make Lowers and everybody just puts their own stamp on them.

Putting a bipod on an AK is tacky.

You might as well put a olive drab tapco stock on it too and hunting scope.

If you paid for a Lancaster AK, I'd leave it the way it is. JMO. :scrutiny:

Congrats. I purchased my Lancaster Arms AKM-47 7.62x39mm w/ Bulgarian Blonde Ironwood furniture through a dealer last November. The receiver is a NoDak Spud (NDS-3).

the NDS are probably the top of the line and are properly heat treated, while to my knowledge the ITM are not. Its kind of like a hesse/vulcan reciever...as in it may work, but then again you might have a big problem on your hands.
