bought my first hangun today!

OK so i know i will probably get a lot of crap from guys for buying a .380 but i bought a Taurus PT 58 S today from a local trading post for $265 used. Reason i bought a .380 instead of 9mm (which i had planned on buying) is because of the cheap price (I hope) of this particular pistol and also the fact that i bought my girlfriend a Taurus millennium pt138 recently so i figured we could buy some bulk .380 together instead of buying 2 different ammo's for plinking. Anyways just wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular gun and also wondering what people think of the price all things considered (OBAMA!). I was planning on using it for shooting at the range, home defense and possible CCW. I know its a lot to ask for one particular gun but funds are a bit short right now. personally I would have opted for the 9mm for the cheapness and availability of ammo... 380 is starting to be hard to find.. but Taurus makes good guns, I have not had any experience with your model specifically, but I own several and have never had a single hiccup out of any of them.
 
i agree about ammo...i know 9mm is cheaper and seems to be more readily available. I am hoping ammo becomes easier to come by shortly especially .380 which seems to be practically non-existent around here as of today.
 
problem is, everyone is backordered on the more common ammo... to keep up, manufacturers have cut back on the not so common... 9x18, 380, 7.62x39, and several others are just in short supply and probably will be for a while... if you can find some 380, I suggest you get it... assuming the price isnt crazy...
 
thanks for the congrats but i already own a polish tantal with 1000rds of 5.45x39 so i'm ready for at least a while if SHTF. But i figured i'd pick up a pistol since i applied for my ccw last week.
 
you chose the .380 over 9mm because it was cheaper...
Walmart here has: 50rds of .380 auto (yes, auto) = $24.99 compared to 50 rds of 9mm = $8.97. If you plan on practicing to get better with your gun, the price of .380 ammo in the long run will end up costing much more than 9mm, even more than the difference of the guns. Plus, with a 9mm, you are guaranteed to have a reliable HD gun with sufficient stopping power.
 
yes in NH you dont need a gun just need to apply and they have to either approve or deny you within 14 days....no class or gun necessary...i know 9mm is cheaper i was hoping to buy .380 in bulk maybe 1000rds at a time to offset the difference if possible.
 
interesting.. I was unaware of that.. in alabama, you need a gun, 10 bucks, 3 days, and a clean backround check... pretty easy...
 
well if i ever leave NH i will probably be heading to the southeast where most of the freedom loving god fearing people left live. God bless America!
 
haha funny.... ok you know hangun means handgun give me a break here i had a few beers celebrating my first HANDGUN purchase!
 
we all congratulate you... my first hanDgun was a walther p-22, which I highly recommend by the way, shoot often get comfortable with its function. take care of it and it will take care of you when necessary...
 
thanks for the positive feedback...just curious though i havent heard any feedback about the price? does it sound like a fair deal for 265?
 
265 sounds like an excellent price if the pistol is in good working condition and you are happy with it.

I had one of the very same guns, seeing this pic makes me wish I had never sold it. Sweet shooting and one of the most reliable bottom feeders I have ever owned. In fact, I never even thought about reliability because the gun just plain worked.

These days that gun is a little big for the caliber but what the heck. Don't let any of these high speed low drag operators get you down, there is nothing wrong with .380 for SD... especially out of a full size barrel. You probably would not be able to find a good working 9mm for that price.

There's plenty of God fearing, freedom loving, commi hating people here in Mississippi. We also cling to our religion and our guns. ;)

Not a bad choice, you could have done a lot worse. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

As a positive note about your caliber selection at least your first gun has an easily controllable caliber. My first gun was a .40 glock given to me from my dad. Wow was that a rude awakening!

well where ever they are i'm just glad they exist!
also the gun has a few wear marks on it but hopefully it works well wont be able to tell till i can get to the range. I just ordered a couple 19 round mags online so i think for the size 19 rounds is pretty respectable.
 
Congratulations or your firearm purchase. If you are not going to reload, consider buying bulk ammo from Georgia-Arms. 1000 rounds of 95gr FMJ's for $250.00. It's called Canned Heat. They also have smaller quantities. I've purchsed their 380 ammo in 100 round bags at a gun show and was very satisfied with it. I have also purchased their 357sig Canned Heat. Very good stuff too. I now reload my own 380's. I carry my 380 with 102gr Remington Golden Sabers in it. It is a very good round and cycles cleanly every time. I've never had a FTF or FTE with Golden Sabers. I even load'em now. Don't let the 9mm folks bother you. Sometimes the 40 S&W guys, the 357sig guys, the 10mm guys and the 45acp guys say the same thing about the 9mm guys. Buy and shoot what YOU want to, what you like, not what WE like. Good luck and BTW: your GF's Taurus is pretty much the same size in 380, 9, 40 and 45acp. If she likes it and wants to go with a larger caliber at a later date, she can step up and feel right at home with the way the gun feels in her hand. The only adjustment would be the difference the caliber makes concerning recoil.

Good gun, good price, though to my way of thinking it's somewhat big in size for a .380. Try Walmart for .380 ammo; saw WWB 100 round count for $33.00 a while back. Should make for decent range ammo.
