Are the Bowie Knives on sale at Big 5 any good or good for anything?

The Winchester Commerative 15" for $25 in particular. At that price I can't help but think that the blade will break or not stay sharp.

I'm a knife novice. All I have now is a 7" Kabar and two Spyderco's, Delica and Endura.

That much steel for that little money, I'm inclined to agree with you sight unseen. Let's see what the specs are on Winchester bowies...

Made in China. "400 grade" stainless steel. Another place says "surgical stainless" (fun fact, "surgical stainless" refers to the steel used to make hemostats and clamps and things, not scalpel blades. Scalpel blades are made from plain old, cheap, low-alloy, high-carbon, non stainless steel). Yep, that's a 420J2 junker if I ever saw one.

Worth closer to $5.

You'd be better off eating the money for fiber in your diet that than spending it on a POS like that.

Any "bowie" that size that costs less than $100 is going to be junk.

What did you pay per ounce or inch for the knives you mention having? Do the math and you should be able to answer your own question about what a 15" knife should cost.
