"The ISRA announced today that July 2006 has been designated as "Say No to Jewel Month." The month-long boycott of Jewel Food Stores comes in response to the grocery chain's $100,000 donation to Illinois groups that support gun control."

"Illinois hunters and sportsmen will be advised to avoid patronizing Jewel Food Stores and Osco pharmacies for the duration of the month-long boycott. Plans for promoting the boycott have yet to be finalized."

Illinois - Midwest Waste Land

I was reminded of a WHO song...

I called this person and she is "not in" . I also spoke to Albertson's corporate in Idaho and let them know what i think .

Let them know what you think.

Regards all

chicago is just a lost cause. If you ask me, that city is the perfect reason why the second amendment was created. I still think that the ISRA should lock and load and take Daley up on his invitation to explain why their guns shouldn't be banned.

Gee. There's Nothing Like Ambition, is There?

A boycott for a mere month. Yeah, that'll really put Jewel in the red.

Come on now--they need a permanent boycott of Jewel, like the one I've been doing all by my lonesome with no one having to convince me (though it is because of their insane prices; now I'll add their gun-grabber support as a reason to stay away).

My note to Lauri

Just today I have caught wind that Albertsons has contributed one hundred thousand dollars in support of gun control here in Illinois.

I am sorry to inform you that if this is true I will no longer be patronizing Jewel Osco stores. At 42 years of age Jewel has been a part of my life almost from my earliest memories. As a child in "the back of the yards" in Chicago I would walk to Jewel with my grandma. We moved to Darien in 1969 and the store built at 75th and Cass was head and shoulders above the Brookhaven IGA that was kitty corner from it at the same intersection. I now live in Clarendon Hills and frequent both the Clarendon Hills store on 55th and the Westmont store on Ogden.

As an avid firearms enthusiast I am disheartened to see your corporation take a stand that is against the countervailing winds of change that are blowing across our country. The people in most of the states of our union have decided that the right of self protection trumps the ineffective nanny state solution of banning inanimate objects. Only the uninformed or those dedicated to disarming innocent law abiding people support gun control. There is no state or nation on earth where gun control has reduced crime.

You not being the person who sets policy and this not being the forum for discussing these issues I will leave you with this final word. If it is true that Albertsons is fighting against the rights of lawful firearms ownership here in Illinois I will be shopping at the Dominicks on Ogden Av in Downers Grove from now on. I also will be forwarding this information to all those gun owners and enthusiasts I know and come in contact with.

Respectfully,
Ron Thomas

I worked (past tense, yesterday was my last day) for Albertsons.

The pricks don't consider Easter a holiday. They pay holiday pay for Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years Day, and I think one other. I volunteered for Easter for the holiday pay (which even then, is only two dollars extra an hour ontop of the extra one for working a Sunday) and get my check and what do I see? No holiday pay. I was not a happy camper.

Now this is interesting. . .

The State Journal-Register (Springfield, IL) ran a report in today's City/State section that seemed to be trying to make it sound like the ISRA is calling off the boycott. Nothing in the article supported that. . . well, you read it:

State rifle group reconsiders boycott
Evaluates gun-buyback donation made by Jewel, Osco

The Illinois State Rifle Association said Thursday it is taking a second look at a planned July boycott against Jewel Food Stores and Osco pharmacies.

The group originally dubbed the monthlong boycott "Say No to Jewel Month," because its members thought the chain donated 1,000 $100 store gift cards to a Chicago-area gun-buyback initiative.

After learning the partnering stores donated $10,000 instead of $100,000 to the "Save a Life, Build the Dream" fund, the ISRA is rethinking its boycott plans.

"We're going to look into this," said Richard Pearson, executive director of the organization. "It doesn't matter to us whether it's $1 or $10,000 or $100,000, the principle's the same to us."

The rifle association is against the buyback, arguing that guns used in crimes are routinely turned in when they could be evidence for prosecutors. Expensive collectors guns are turned in as well, Pearson said.

Money from the fund will award $100 Chase debit cards to whoever hands over a gun at the Saturday buyback, which will be held at 23 Chicago-area churches.

Glen Brooks, coordinator for Chicago Alternative Policing Strategies, said this is the first large-scale buyback in Chicago. CAPS is helping organize the initiative.

Pearson noted that if Jewel donated money to the rifle association, it could be used to fund firearm-safety programs.

Lauri Sanders, a Jewel spokeswoman, said she never has received such a request from the ISRA, whereas CAPS approached Jewel and Osco and requested the chain sign up to be a sponsor for Saturday's event.

"All we are doing is supporting the fund," Sanders said. "At no time has anybody gone out and said people with rifles need to get rid of them."

Sanders said the buyback doesn't violate anyone's constitutional rights but merely protects citizens from violence.

"I'm quite sure that the National Rifle Association supports children growing up to reach adulthood in safe communities," Sanders said. "We're trying to get the dangerous elements off of our streets."

Is it just me, or the are the bold parts self-contradictory?
All they are doing is supporting the fund? The fund is money used to tell people with rifles that they need to get rid of them!
That is a lie. You are lying. . . you are a liar. That is all.

I didn't hear any statement from ISRA that they're reconsidering anything, as well they should not. This company "only" donated $10,000 for an idiotic buyback scheme run by dishonest gun-grabbers? Oh, well that's different. We'll just let them be about their business, then.

Lupinus, why would Easter be considered a holiday for a grocery store?

other than the important boost in sales that all that candy generates.

My company didn't recognize Easter as a holiday. Yet it did recognize MLK day as a holiday. Kind of weird, but ya know what? That's their perogative. You have a problem with it, take it up with the owners of the company. Or quit, like you did. I respect that. Most people just complain and never take steps to do something about it, so bravo!

I personally don't recognize any religious holidays. People are amazed that I will sign up to work Xmas. Hell ya, easy freaking double pay. But I get pretty ticked off when I have to work on Memorial and Independance Day. This year will be different though, I've worked all the holidays for the past few years for this company, time for some time off.

As far as the boycott goes: Who cares? They donated 100 grand. The few sales they'll loose from gunners won't come close to what they donated, they won't even notice. Boycotts are like online petitions. They don't do anything but give chest-thumpers something to point at and say 'Look at me! I'm BOYCOTTING!'

If you live in a place where you can, please consider tactful open carry in Albertsons and Osco stores. I do all the time. Let's show that a sidearm doesn't stop a citizen from being peacable, gentle, and polite. I'll bet the people in the store notice that a lot more than they notice yet another buyback.

We can hold our breath until we turn blue, or we can take the high road.

Wow! You scared me there for a minute. I am in love with Jewel, and couldn't boycott her, although I guess she is more likely than not on the other side of the political spectrum from me. Still, she's hot.

Kami-
One of the things that gets to me also, is they found a hundred grand to give away. Yet at the same time couldn't find the money to pay me more then two dollars extra an hour for working a holiday (at least the ones they recognize as a holiday) or more then one extra dollar an hour on Sunday heck even wal-mart gives its employees better. But what was worse yet Albertsons is in enough trouble to sell to CVS, scare full time people enough to cash out their 401k's early (several managers and full time at my store have and even more are considering it), cut my work time by 5-10 hours a week, and yet can find the money to give things away on ten hour sales take back damn near anything even if it's the customers fault *cough*overcooked shrimp*cough* and donate almost ten times my salery to one charity.

My first post

Hi all;

I am in Illinois. The Jewel store thing is important i think if for no other reason than sending emails and making calls. Companies get nervous for a whole lot less as do politicians. 65,000,000 gun owners are a tremendous (potential) voting block be it with ballots or dollar$.

I sent an email to [email protected] expressing my confidence that Jewel will not do this again. I will boycott in July regardless even if i am just a small pimple on Jewels butt.

Someone has got to do it, or fold up and die.:what:
