Can someone please refresh my memory - I saw a thread on this somewhere but neglected to save it. I know that the thread size, cap size and nipple length come into it.

Here are the generally available nipple size/thread spec combinations:

MD is major (thread) diameter
TPI is threads per inch
Pitch is thread wavelength - distance it takes thread to make one full cycle
Spec is the thread standard

What's missing above, and what's at least as important as any of those numbers, is the length of the nipple from the base of the thread to the top of the nipple, or as a compromise, the overall nipple length. None of the retailers specifies either of those parameters in their charts, preferring instead to attempt to characterize the gun into which the nipple will fit. This is of limited use, however, if your gun isn't listed.

I'm currently attempting to either put new nipples on my guns or at least stock one full set of spares for each gun. I order two nipples of each size that I think, based on the descriptions in the Track of the Wolf and Thunder Ridge web sites, and I"m having limited success. I'm finding there is quite a bit of guessing required; I have a few nipples I'll never need at this point. I'm also trying to come up with a cross reference like that on Thunder Ridge, but including nipple length. And minus the mistakes (the TR chart shows their p/n 5011L cross references with both Treso p/n's 11-50-05 [CVA Rifles] and 11-50-16 [Uberti Revolvers] which is nonsense; 11-50-05 is an M6x1 thread and 11-50-16 is a 12x28 thread - close, but no cigar).

If and when I finish this project I'll publish the results. Here's what I have so far:

Treso part numbers:
11-50-01 is 1/4x28x0.635, = RST-A @ TOTW
11-50-03 is M6x0.75x0.603, = RLP-A @ TOTW
11-50-05 is M6x1x0.640, = TBD
11-50-10 is M6x0.75xTBD, = TBD
11-50-16 is 12x28x0.501, = PCC-A @ TOTW

TOTW part numbers (AMPCO bronze nipples only):
CVA-A is M6x1x0.640 =Treso TBD
PIR-A is M6x0.75x0.521 =Treso TBD
PCC-A is 12x28x0.501, = Treso 11-50-16
RLP-A is M6x0.75x0.603, = Treso 11-50-03
RST-A is 1/4x28x0.635, = Treso 11-50-01

TR part numbers (TRM nipples only):
5001S is 1/4x28xTBD
5005S is M6x1x0.690
5006S is M6x0.75x0.695
5011L is 12x28xTBD
5013S is M6x1x0.522
5014S is M6x0.75xTBD

So far the only ones I've verified as to fitting the gun are the CVA-A TOTW nipples; they fit my CVA kit guns as well as the originals, despite some length variation.

Some specifics

Thanks for the helpful replies. If I outline my problem in more detail maybe readers could comment further.

I have 2 replica C&B revolvers in .44 cal. They are an Uberti Army Model Colt and a Pietta New Army Remington. I use CCI caps (which is the only brand I can get here) in size No. 10. These caps fit the Colt but are a bit tight; on the other hand they are loose and tend to fall off the Remington's nipples unless crimped. I have read very good reports of Thunder Ridge nipples and want to get 2 sets for each gun.

The Thunder Ridge web-site indicates that I should get TRESO nipple in size
11-50-16 for the Colt and 11-50-10 for the Remington, but I am a bit uneasy at the way the number 11 features in both designations as I want nipples to fit No. 10 caps. Comment and advice will be welcome.

You have good reason to be concerned. All of the Treso nipples I've bought have been sized for #11 caps only. In fact, I've not found any #10 sized nipples of any brand from any supplier yet.

I'm a bit surprised at #10's being too loose on your Pietta '58 Remington New Army. I shot both my Pietta '58 Remington (in .36 cal, so it's really a New Navy) and my Pietta 1851 Colt Navy (also in .36) this weekend. I used CCI #11 caps on the Remington and they stayed on quite well, while CCI #10's were too loose (I did not have a dowel to seat them with) on the Colt.

Perhaps it's age that's the difference. My Remington was made in 1981, and they may, in fact, probably did, change nipple sizes for some reason in the interim.
