Can anyone tell me if its legal to own a bp revolver in the extreme North part of ny state ? I would just be target practicing with it , and want to know if its legal before I would even bring one there.

Having left the People's republic of New Yawk some years ago, I can't give you accurate, legal information. I would advise contacting the New York State Police and ask them directly. When I lived there it was legal to OWN a cap & ball revolver as long as you did not possess the components to load it. Owning black powder (or pyrodex) and balls or percussion caps along with a C&B revolver would require you being licensed to own a "handgun." A loaded C&B handgun without a handgun permit would net you 1 year in prison. This was true for any black-powder muzzle loading handgun, even a wheel lock or flint lock. I doubt things have changed much if at all. Don't take chances with the NYS Nazis, don't just drive to Vermont, move there permanently.

What Curator said. Anybody can own one as a presentation piece, but if you are in possession of even ONE component -- powder OR ball OR cap -- you have to have it registered and you have to have a pistol permit.

The NRA web site has a section that contains the Federal Firearms Laws as well as those for all the States and many large cities.

You may need to be a lawyer to completely understand the ones for your locality though!!!

Don't do anything that risks your freedom or your financial well being.

New York treats antique firearms as firearms. You would have to get a permit from the sheriff of the county you're living in for permission to even buy or bring one in first, then register it with him if you get approved.

See if there are any shooting clubs in that part of NY that could provide possibly more current information. There are a number of them in and around Albany for example.

Unfortunately, the commies in NYC get to bully the whole rest of the state which is quite conservative and gun friendly and rich in American (gun) history.

Yep. Can buy a Blackpowder pistol from Cabelas and have it shipped. However, owning any of the components to make it fire means handgun and in NY in order to even touch a handgun you need to have a pistol permit

Q - Are antique handguns subject to the same laws as those applied to modern handguns?

The Penal Law definition of antique firearm is generally applied to muzzle loading black powder firearms, but also applies to pistols or revolvers "that use fixed cartridges which are no longer available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade".

Muzzle loading pistols or revolvers do not have to be registered on a pistol permit if the owner never intends to fire them.

If they are possessed in a loaded condition or are simply possessed simultaneously with the components necessary to make them fire, they must first be registered on a valid pistol permit.

Note: Should a manufacturer begin to produce ammunition for a pistol or revolver for which ammunition had not been available previously, that weapon no longer meets the criteria of an antique weapon and is required to be registered. A pistol or revolver, regardless of age, when possessed with the ammunition necessary to make it discharge, is required to be registered.

You can buy any black powder pistol you want through the mail or otherwise. If you possess the items needed to fire it, black powder, projectiles, and caps, then you must add it to your permit.
