They say lock doors, barricade, and hide.
I don't know how effective that is.

I realize this isn't the "sexy" solution of fighting back H2H or with your CCW, but it is the most effective strategy on an individual level. Think about it from the perspective of the active shooter: What is your goal? How long will you try to break down a locked door? (sub-question-how long will you try if you know someone is in there vs. how long if you have no idea?), Also, consider the construction of commercial grade doors in buildings. Consider police response time and that with every second spent looking or beating on a door, your other potential targets are getting away and the police are en-route...

Hiding behind a locked door is the best individual strategy if escape cannot be guaranteed/feasible. The best strategy for group benefit is taking them out...at great risk to the individual who tries it, armed or not, especially if "not."

Look at it from a LE point of view as well. With the school on lockdown, just about anyone in the hallway is suspicious.

One or two people are easier to secure than a stampede.

Running is always a risk if you dont know where the potential threat is, you could be running straight for it...

Without knowing the layout, I think its a safe assumption your boy took the right action. Kudos for looking out for others too.

In this school shelter in place actually makes sense. It was built in the 1950's with money from the Feds to serve as a CD Shelter. The entire building including interior walls is cinder block. They upgraded the doors to steel in steel frames the doors swing into the room. There are extra brace/latch things on the inside and I take it on their own some teachers have purchased wedges to jam under the door.

One of the take aways from the drill is for some members of the staff to round up strays and either evacuate or move to another shelter location.

Pretty much classic run, hide , fight.

I guess during the drill several PO were walking the building to evaluate how locked down things where. One forgot to pull out the 'Police' flap on his raid jacket and almost got konked in the head by a custodian with a large wrench! DOH!

While armed security along with the SIP strategy would be ideal, in the real world it isn't going to happen any time soon.
Gotta say, when you said janitor with a wrench my brain immediately went to willy from The Simpsons ripping his shirt off and going nuts. Either way I respect the guy already.

Edit, now that I reread what i quoted... it could be the "DOH!" that inspired thoughts of The Simpsons. LOL
