My brother and I have a couple beginning rabbit hunters and have to feed 410s.
Do any of you use the brass shells?
Do you use an over powder wad and shot cup or the classic wad stack?
If you use the wad stack. How does it pattern compared to the shot cup?

It's been a long time since I have even messes with brass 410 shells . I just used the standard 410 shot cups with an over shot card held in with melted wax. You have to remember that the 410 does not use a traditional was cushion type wad like other gauges. The 410 uses a shot cup instead. I don't remember if I used an over powder card or not.

I played with them just a touch back when I was using a 410 alot. Never really seemed worth it. With the Winchester HS shells I just started using them for everything.

I happened on an Ed Harris article about it.
He mentioned using either method. I figured I'd ask on here. To get a second opinion.

I have always stuck with either Winchester or Clay Buster 410 wads (cups) for all of my 410 loads. Sorry I am not much help, it has been quite a long time since I have messed with brass 410 hulls.

The clay buster wads are inexpensive. I'll just order some of them as well.
It may offend some black powder guys. But I run WAA12 F114 wads in my black powder SXS.

You can successfully use 444 Marlin brass in lieu of 410 brass shells but you will likely have to cut the gas seal “stem” off wads (and use an over powder card wad) to fit everything in the brass.

I saw that 303, 30-40, 9.3x74r, and 444 are possible options. Some people were even loading 45LC mini shells.

410 brass is currently available and actually cheaper. I was surprised when it popped up while searching for 410 shells. I'm going to start with 50 pieces.
It reminds me of loading goose hunting loads with my dad when I was barely big enough to pull the press lever.

I tried the 303 conversion and never got satisfactory expansion of the brass in the 410 chamber. They were always asymmetric pretty badly.

It also seems that 444 brass is more likely to fit 410 extractors than 303 brass, despite specifications. In any event, glad to hear 410 brass is available again.

I use 45 caliber nitro cards stacked, 1/4 fiber wad #4 buck and cream of wheat as a buffer topped off with another nitro card. Sealed with hot glue gun. Also use stump wads with STS hulls and get comparable results.
I have used 444 Marlin brass in the past. Before you go this route try one and see if it will eject. Some guns won't work. The Magtech shotshells cost way less than the 444 these days. I even custom honed out a 444 sizing die to size the .410 brass.

Thanks. I am looking to load #4 shot for rabbit and squirrel.
If I load buckshot. I have a jug of buffer that was given to me.
I'm just happy I found actual 410 brass. In the past it was unavailable and I didn't want to ruin my 30-40 brass. It's too hard to find.

Thanks to this thread, ive now got a box of 410 brass coming in the mail to bring my total to 50

And some varget and lil'gun too

LiL Gun and H110 are the most popular powders for 410. Unfortunately we have to fight the magnum revolver and 300BO reloader since they use H110 too. I use H110 for all my bird shot loads and my 000 buckshot loads.

Just make sure that you NEVER use powders meant for 20 and 12 gauges to reload 410 shells.

Well I'm a Magnum pistol loader. So I have 10 pounds of h110, 4 pounds of 2400, and a pound of lil gun.;)
I hear you on not using faster shotgun powders. They are the opposite of rifles. The bigger the bore. The faster the burn rate.
