anyone here ever had a problem sizing brass that has been shot in a break down rifle to reload and shoot in a bolt action. i have a rem.700 243 cal and the boys have a rossi break action single shot. i tried to reload some of the shells they shot ,and was going to shoot in the rem but the shells won't chamber.. we trimmed them ,resized them and reloaded them ,but no dice,,,what gives

Welcome to the forum...

We will need a lot more information on your reloading procedures before anyone can start to guess what went wrong. Did you trim the brass before you resized it like you said above? You should resize first then trim. Did you do a full length resize? Did you set the C.O.A.L. to the correct size? There are so many different things that could go wrong it's hard to figure it out without much more information.

headspace is terrible on break actions in general i think , to make sure they`ll close .
had a 243 that i could`nt get a third firing out of the brass , even if i set the shoulder back just enuff so it would close!!!

the children (girls) were highly upset!!!!

Basic reloading rule. Don't interchange brass between firearms. When Full length resizing, make sure you give the die an extra 1/8 turn down or more after the die contacts the shell holder.

I have had this issue several times in the past. Get yourself a small base die, and some Imperial Sizing Wax, and FL size the cases with it, you will have no more issues with them not fitting the other rifle.

First, all size dies and shell holders are made to bring all resized brass back to SAAMI specs we can swap reloaded ammo between rifles, It works fine IF the cases are indeed fully resized. Many people DO NOT SIZE CORRECTLY!

Following directions to "touch the shell holder and then turn the die down another 1/16. 1/8, 1/4, etc., turn are almost meaningless in application. Every press in the market has some measure of spring under sizing pressure, and to some degree even between the same model and brand. Thus, it is important that the size die be set to work with the press you are using, not your buddy's.

Simply push a fired case fully into the sizing die. Then, with the lever down and the press under full load, see if there is a visible gap between the shell holder and die. If there is, and there usually is, lower the ram, screw the die down a tad and do it again. Keep setting the die down until the gap disappears under full pressure. Then YOUR brass will be sized to SAAMI specs on YOUR EQUIPMENT.

I do NOT recommend doing this with cases intended to be used in a single arm, doing so works the cases more than is needed. Sizing each set of cases so that the bolt closes with just a hint of resistance for a specific rifle is a much better method of working. It will make for better case life but, those cases won't necessarily fit in other rifles.
