From the PTR91 owners manual:

"BREAK IN PROCEDURES:
I. Fire 10 single shots. After each shot, push a cotton patch wet with solvent through the bore. Then wet a bronze brush with solvent and stroke the barrel five to ten times. Follow with another wet patch and then enough dry patches to completely remove any solvents and/or wetness from the barrel.

II. Fire 10-20 shots, clean as above after each round of firing. Repeat step 2 until you have reached the suggested 200-300 rounds"

Does anyone really do this? Seems excessive for a battle rifle.
200 round break in also.

No.

Most all my rifles have hardchromed bores, so breaking in is pretty pointless. The ones that don't are still just cleaned and then shot.

OTOH, I don't do copper cleaning more than twice a year or every thousand rounds of so.

My PTR came with a very nice non chrome plated commercial barrel. The barrel may be as good as a match barrel but the rifle platform is not a match rifle. I never got as good as accuracy from my PTR as I do from my match M1a's. But so what, its a battle rifle!

All I did was shoot the rifle at the range and clean it up when I got home. There are people who believe in barrel break in, and I am one who does not.

Its a battle rifle. Its unlikely to ever shoot much better than around 2moa. Take it out, shoot the crap out of it, clean it when accuracy falls off or it begins to malfunction. Often times, far more wear is put on a rifle by over cleaning than by firing or normal use.

The only manufacturers break-in instructions I remember reading were from Shilen regarding the new expensive match stainless 6mm Rem barrel I just bought. "Shoot ten shots. Clean. Shoot ten shots. Clean." Done.

Google: "Gale McMillan" and read his thoughts on barrel break-in. He is talking BR/Match rifles...

Barrel break in

I think the whole barrel break in thing has been over blown during the past years.....Having issued 1000's of brand new M-16's over a period of years.....we ( armorers) ran a patch thru the bore.....issued the rifle with cleaning kit.....instructed the operators how to field strip and clean their rifles - which they did under our supervision and then they were off to the races.
I have several high dollar precision rifles - Mc Millan's, etc....I clean the bore good - shoot it, clean it. I have several PTR's and HK 91's and I think if you clean the bore good, then you are good to go....take it out and shoot it, then clean it and maintain it as you would any quality rifle.
