breakfree clp or rem oil or hoppes oil

i have used break free for the last few years. i did use rem oil for a couple cans worth but it smells like its just wd40. i used to love hoppes oil it seems thick and odorless. plus the military trusts breakfree so i switched. what do you guys think

On areas of high pressure such as slide rails, CLP lasts far longer than either of the oils.

Weaponshield or Mobile 1 full synthetic work even better. CLP is the best for rust protection/lubrication.

My experience has been the same as DBRs. When I was in the military I also noticed that CLP seemed to gunk up inside the M16 a little. I haven't seen that type of residue using Mobile 1.

I have been using Mobil 1 for a few years and have been very happy with the results, and the price for quantity, compared to ANY other dedicated gun oil I have ever tried. Cheap, available all over, stay put pretty well, doesn't evaporate, and not a speck of rust on any gun.

For anything where I like a little grease (1911 rails, M1 and AR friction points, etc), I use a little but of Lubriplate. Slick, fairly cheap for quantity, stays put, etc. This and Mobil 1 also seem to make cleaning a little easier too.

I am starting to experiment with some silicone oil I use at work (sorry, no details on brand, where to get it, etc, as we get it from France, and the tiny bit of info on the bottle is all in French, which I dont speak, and I suspect there likely inst much info there to help anyways, and may be custom made for our company anyways, but the quart I have should last forever, so no biggie) and was given some of, in place of Mobil 1 on a few guns to test out, as the stuff is the slipperiest oil I have EVER felt, and the silicone should also be good for rust prevention when put on a cloth, and wiping the gun down.

Gun smith friend of mine did a test: Oiled up some common nails and put them separately into small mason jars of water. Nails stood 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the water.

He tested like 20 different oils. Many I had never seen or heard of but were apparently gun type oils.

After 2-years (yes 24 months) the CLP nail had only very minor rust on it. I would say it came in second and darn if I can remember which won 1st place.

Rem Oil did only fair.

WD-40 was a complete failure. Nail was a rusted blob.

CLP is a bit pricey, but it works really well.

Is there a particular weight of the mobil 1 synthetic one should use? I have Break Free CLP which works great plus, I have used left over Valveolene 5w-30 full synthetic which, seems to bond to metal surfaces and lubricate quite well.

I still use CLP on certain areas, and remoil on the exterior finish, though.

I bought 15W50, as there wasn't a straight 40W or higher at the local Walmart at the time. I'd say the thicker the better, as it will stay put better, instead of all running down and/or out of the gun while its sitting in the safe or whatever, which thinner oils really like to do.

But, as usual YMMV. Some people like me love Mobil 1 for the price and believe it works great, others swear by CLP, Remoil, WD-40, etc. For just lube where you want oil, and not a grease, it probably doesn't make ALL that much difference what you use (in my opinion/experience), as they are all slippery, but for rust protection (which isn't an issue where I live, but will be in many places), thats where the big differences in oils, and opinions, comes in.

I have never had ANY rust appear on ANY of my guns ever, having lived in 5 states, with any oil I have used (some just required checking, and re-applying more often than others), but 4 of those states were pretty consistent low humidity, so...

Winchester took over CLP Break Free factory now if used to be the label only CLP now they have Winchester on it i think the one with the Winchester on the CLP Break free 4 oz can is alot better then the old stuff..

sorry, i am a retired mechanic. i KNOW about all the nasty acids and combustion deposits (amungst other things) in used motor oil. part of it's job is to keep the nasty stuff in suspension, so it can be DRAINED OUT! i do use used motor oil for two things though. 1) starting campfires, and 2) on the bar of my chainsaw. other than that, the best thing to do with it is give it to a recycle center. i am cheap, but not so cheap that i won't buy good oil to use on my guns.

CLP sucks. The old LSA is better.
remoil is garbage

i've used wilson's ultimalube on my wilson supergrade compact and haven't had any rust issues where applied, but also, it is not very effective as a lube, so i stopped using it

mobil1 is good
machine gunner's lube is awesome lube, but not so hot at rust prevention
slip2000 EWL is best i've found so far

I voted CLP because it's excellent. Also Mobile 1.

But for most of the 45+ years I've been shooting used WD-40 with acceptable results though most of them were in the AZ desert where rust isn't a huge problem. Have tried Rem Oil too but it seems about the same as WD-40 as said before. I like a little more lubrication on the rails of a semiauto.

Anybody tried that S&W Heavy Duty Bore Cleaner? The spray can that's shaped like a 357 cartridge, right down to a copper jacketed hollowpoint top? As a joke my wife got me a can for my birthday but I never got around to using it yet since I use Hoppes. She got a kick out of the can and I do too. Suppose it's all right but always forget I have it. Guess I have a new excuse to go shootin'

Mobile-1 and BreakFree CLP contain the same base synthetic lubricant. CLP just has additives for more corrosion resistance,ect. I prefer straight mobile on the insides but i use hoppes elite or something on the outside for corrosion. I will switch to BreakFree CLP to wipe down the outside of my guns when i run out of hoppes becouse CLP is a good all around lube and contains good synthetics like Mobile-1 if i have to use it on the action. No oil is good for everything. I like grease on some slides,bolts,sears,ect and Remoil is good for a light coating on firing pin channels, magazines, trigger groups,ect.

It's an excellent firearms lubricant, probably the best that I've ever used. A "plus" is that it is also quite inexpensive.

I treat any new gun with CLP on all metal. After firing, if there is a lot of fouling or leading I swab the bore with Hoppes #9 and always finish with CLP.
