I recently picked up several boxes of the new Brenneke 28 gauge slugs just to see what they would do.

5/8 oz square shouldered forster style for smooth bore barrels. Looked very nice in the clear/opaque hull. 1450 fps quoted speed. I shot a five shot group at 50 yards with my 870 Wingmaster, twin barrel beads for sighting, rested off of sand bags. Very manageable recoil, more than a target load, my gun and barrel shot almost a foot low on the target I was shooting at. All five shots were within 3" sideways, although they strung almost 7" in the vertical. Total group was at 7.4" at 50 yards, not great, although I had two almost in the same hole. I was detecting a couple of holes with a bit of yaw to them like they were trying to upset. I had a I/C choke in the barrel. I didn't get any pics of the target.

I may try my 1100 with the fixed mod choke if I get the time, I wasn't real pleased with how the 870 performed and how low it shot. Just thought 28 gauge fans might be interested in these new slugs, the first factory slugs I have ever seen for sale. :)

Glad to know those are available - if only Remington would chamber their 'Junior' Express guns in 28 gauge, and load some buckshot rounds for them, it would be great for smaller statured or recoil sensitive folks who wanted a defensive shotgun.

Thanks for the report,

lpl

Predictable vertical stringing is seldom the fault of ammunition - it's just too regular of a pattern.

Vertical strings are caused (99% of the time) by undisciplined breathing, rapid barrel heating, or inconsistent pressure on the forearms (like the kind you get when shooting a pump gun from a bench rest).

I am very interested in this product. You yourself said you got two shots almost in the same hole ... that's a heck of a lot of luck for a foster slug @ 50yds with a bead sight. That makes me think you could have printed much better groups with the same gun and ammo under different circumstance.

There is likely some outside factor that you are not addressing, or failed to account for. If possible, could you do this test again with some pictures?

Well if funds allow and you wouldn't mind having it done you could buy a second barrel and have it cut down to 20 or 18.5 inches (which should remove constriction) and give it another try.

I am not new to shooting off of a bench, yes the vertical stringing was possibly my fault, with how my beads stacked up. 50 yards even a hairs width can string, but the shooting low was surprising.
