I'm planning on replacing the firing pin in a Mauser C96. The pin has a short spring on the end of it and I've seen various comments that a new spring needs to be installed by a gunsmith.

This doesn't appear to be rocket science, but I'm asking if anyone knows why a gunsmith would be necessary.

Nope?

If you know how to get it out to look at it?

You should be able to figure out how to replace it.

(Course, I don't know the insides of a C96 from the inside of an F86.)

The short spring is designed to be threaded onto the end of the firing pin, which is threaded to accept it.

Comments like this don't help.

As Gyvel says, the C 96 has a little trick to that spring. There is a one turn thread on the firing pin and the rear coil of the spring turns into that thread. That was done to keep the spring in place as the firing pin is removed for disassembly. The firing pin has to be withdrawn through the recoil spring, so a loose firing pin spring could be pulled off and lost. Because of that tight fit, a new spring, once installed, may have to be trimmed down to the same diameter as the firing pin. I suspect that is why someone suggested having a gunsmith install it.

Incidentally, there is no need to disassemble the gun to remove the firing pin; just push in with the end of the cleaning rod or a screwdriver and turn it 90 degrees to the right. The firing pin will pop out and can be removed with the fingers.
