550-1 .22 rifle. I was allowed to try it for a few rounds before buying. It ran Mini-Mags fine but I put a handful of CCI CB longs down the tube, they'd fire but wouldn't cycle the next round properly. Bolt wouldn't go into battery and had to be racked again. Im assuming even though it says it can shorts and longs, they have to be High Velocity not quiet. It was $150, it has some old scope on it, i think it's a 3x or 4x power. Its little hazy but it still worked. After buying I ran about 50 rounds of Aguila Super Extra .22LR no issues and very nice groups with my shaky hands even on bench rest. I wouldn't mind going to a more modern scope one day. I know theres a way to date to them based on the symbols?

Nice rifle! I enjoy the old Remingtons I’ve got a model 34 I really like. Great shooter. You got a Good price in your 550

Nice! Looks like a 20mm Weaver K2.5 to me, the scope and mount are period-correct for the gun. It should have a makers stamp just in front of the eyepeice. You might want to buy a refurbished one on Ebay since there arent many good 20mm scopes in production now, and there probably arent any 25mm mounts that will fit a 550.

Nice gun, congrats!

Gotta watch out for vintage .22s, though, they tend to multiply rapidly in a gunsafe.:D

They had a Marlin 60 sitting next to it for $120, kinda regret not asking if they'd take it for $100 along with the Remington. The Marlin looked like someone had tapped the receiver for a scope and either 2 sets of holes were strippes or bolts broke off.

It's my understanding the current scope is a 3/4" tube diameter? I see Tasco makes a cheap 3-7x20mm scope and its $18 at Wal-Mart. Wouldn't mind trying it and putting this old one away since it belongs with the gone

You stole that rifle at that price. Great find.

My 550-1 eats anything I feed it. Shorts, longs, long rifles, high or low velocity, it doesn't matter Your gun should do the same. Carbine Williams said to NEVER clean that floating chamber, but my gun functioned better after a good scrubbing. Also, these guns like to be well lubed, make sure yours is. Just keep any lube on the bolt and away from that floating chamber. Never dry fire these guns. The firing pin is about 4" long and quite thin. Dry firing will trash it in short order.

There is a date code next to the receiver to the right of the caliber markings. It looks like YY that would be 1952. there should be a letter preceding the YY. That would give you the month

No. That's why I always load something weak as the last two rounds in the mag. When I hear a "pop" instead of a "BANG" I know I'm on my last round.

Is the bolt supposed to lock open when its empty?

No.

I have been shooting one 550 or another for over 40 years. Nearly all plinking shooting I have done has resulted in dry firing multiple times a day. I havent damaged a firing pin yet.

If you want to mix ammo in a semi that model Remington leads the pack ! Masterful how the floating chamber works when you put in a Short length case ! Amazing reliability, but the CB or Low noise loads are a little too weak. Standard velocity ammo does work Great !.

Ive tried that scope. It may sell for $18, but thats twice what its worth......

CBs aren't going to work in any semi that I know of. Good gun but "pre-64" is meaningless on anything but Winchester.

but the CB or Low noise loads are a little too weak.
I have heard this more than once. Since my gun eats everything, including low noise and CB caps, I think it might be time to check my recoil spring. It may be a little weak.

Never tried the quiet rounds or low power in mine but it shoots 22 S/L/LR just fine. The "Floating Chamber" is pretty cool. I made one real nice rifle from two and sold the remaining one for $100 at a show.

Well I shoot it again today. Didn't use CB longs, but fired some Aguila HV shorts and some CCI Suppressor. It ran them okay. Im kinda set on getting a better scope though. It was shooting to the left on Sunday, today I tried to adjust and didn't really do anything then it started to group badly so I just put it away.
