i have a browning auto-5 "light twelve", the serial number on the reciever is 25670 with a small 5G above it. according to the browning website, that puts my gun at 1948.. then i read that "from 1958 on serial numbers were preceded by the date of manufacture, 8M = standard wieght for 1958, 8G = light wieght for 1958. so now im confused, what does the 5G above my serial number mean if they only started doing this post 1958? thanks.

They didn't make Lt-12's in 1948.
They were made in standard weight only by Remington then. (1946-1951)

The G designation for the lightweight gun started in 1956.
Your gun was made in 1965 near as I can tell. (If it has a rounded knob on the pistol grip.)
