My son stumbled into a real good deal on one. It has a collar on it that says R S on it. We don’t know what the collar does. Any one? I looked up a pdf manual and did some googling and skimmed the manual and a post or two but the manual doesn’t seem to include anything and the comment was on a thread in a forum that was full of wisenheimers making jokes not helping.

That is the magazine cutoff. "R" for repeater, "S" for single shot. In single shot mode the action arms won't drop down with the action open, so you can just drop a shell in the chamber. It used to be on all BPS shotguns, but now it's only on the trap model.

That's the trap model. The BPs is as well deigned and built as any gun ever. Had 3 and not one ever missed a beat. But they are heavier, feel "different", and I could never grow to love having to load all rounds thru the bottom.
