What would be a good choke for 00 buck and foster slugs? Some say for slugs nothing tighter than imp. cyl., but I don't know.

My two shotguns work best with improved cylinder for slugs. This may not be the same for yours, best to try some out.
For the cheap buckshot modified (sometimes even tighter chokes) seems to work well. For the flight control wads/premium buckshot I wouldn't go any tighter than improved cylinder. Again, your mileage may vary.

You'll just need to try your gun with your chokes and your ammo. Fosters "rifled slugs" are designed specifically to swage down and be safe when fired through full chokes just in case. But they may or may not be most accurate through a restrictive choke.

I say imp cylinder, skeet, cylinder bore, nothing tighter than modified.
My friend shot a foster through a full choke and cracked the barrel for about 10 inches down from the muzzle of a beautiful auto 5 browning 16ga.
These stories are around.

Always seem to relate to OLD guns. I sometimes wonder whether these stories aren't really an OBSTRUCTION in the bore. Probably SOME of them are.

You're not gonna crack an un-obstructed Mossberg 500 barrel shooting a Foster slug through a full choke.

Most of the guns I have tried in 60+ years of slug shooting liked mod or imp cyl. Cylinder bore exerts little to no influence on the undersized Fosters. The Federal TruBall shot very well in everything from cyl to mod.
BTW, rifled choke tubes do nothing.

I've had my best results with IC and good results with Mod. I shoot Brenneke slugs through the very tight and thin-walled barrels of my combination guns with excellent accuracy; they are designed for the older traditional full and fuller choked German guns.

I like Modified best with standard American buckshot loads...fewer flyers with reasonably dense patterns.

Based on my personal testing and watching many patterns of buckshot and groups from slugs in training classes, I think this is a pretty good rule of thumb:

12ga: Imp Cyl is probably going to be you best bet.

20ga buckshot: mod is usually the best with the smaller BS sizes in 20. BUT: slug accuracy and POI changes drastically with the tighter mod choke and usually end up back at Imp Cyl.
I would even go as far to say Brenneke doesn’t like any choke in 20. 12ga Brenneke are more forgiving.

General rules only. As with any shotgun patterning, you need to shoot you gun/choke to know for sure.

I use Improved Cylinder for slugs and modified for Buckshot.

I shot a Remington lead slugs thru a full choked shotgun before without damage. Wouldn't do that again, but I didn't know better at the time.

You can use whatever choke you want for buckshot or lead slugs.
It won't hurt the gun.

Bore diameter of 12 gauge is 0.729"

Experiment with YOUR gun and see what works best for YOUR application.

A rather uncautious generalized statement. I view it as similar to the meme with a ring with AC outlet prongs on it, or a Tiktok challenge involving drinking bleach.
While gently encouraging potential Darwin Award winners may seem fun, it isn't very High Road.
And bore diameter in 12 gauges varies. I have one that it is .740, another .725.

Nobodies asked the OP what he is trying to accomplish, as there are different applications of choke here.

Maximum accuracy with slugs, buckshot close range spread? (home defense scenario) Cyl, IC or Skeet will likely do well here.

OK with slugs, OK buckshot pattern? (compromise) IC, possibly modified or one of the long slow taper non-toxic chokes. Some experimentation will be needed with both slugs and buck.

Maximum tightness with buckshot, slugs as an afterthought? Extensive experimentation with buckshot loads and choke will be needed. I'm guessing strictly buffered buck loads, and a "pass" Carlson's extended waterfowl choke is the best start point. These are meant to gently compress large pellet steel and tungsten, and it's been my experience they throw really impressive buckshot patterns with buffered loads. Mine will put the Federal 2.75" 9 pellet LE load into 30" at 50 yards almost every shot. They'll shoot foster slugs, but will develop leading and accuracy is relative at best.
