On a visit to the Great Smoky Mtn.’s and Gatlinburg for the first time in years, and swing by Bud’s Gun in Sevierville… frankly; I was not impressed. Don’t mistake me- respectable selection of firearms, helpful staff; but… not what I personally expected. Limited ammunition selection, limited reloading supplies, no snap caps and limited related esoterica. Handled a few odd specimens I’d not gotten the chance to handle elsewhere, but I’d almost state that Sevierville Pawn next door had a better firearm selection. I did not expect a literal *warehouse*, but Good Lord… I expected a better use of floor space than the tourist trap it boiled down to.

My family has been goin out around Sevierville since i was a kid. And it has became a tourist trap for sure. Its like the myrtle beach of the mountains. And if your there in the hot times of summer season its a disaster area. First buds guns i ever went to was in Lexington Kentucky and it was nice and very well stocked. But like you said the one in Sevierville pretty much sucks. My favorite place to visit when im out that way is the smokey mountain knife works. And they also have more firearm related stuff then the buds does. And the kinda knife museum they have on top floor is a must see collection if your a edged weapon fan. As for all the tourist attractions on the street there the crime museum is really cool with tons of historic firearms and stuff to walk through.

I started visiting SMKW back in their small building closer to the highway exit back in the 1980’s. Oh how it has grown. Best selection of Damascus knives I have seen outside a bladesmiths shop. The Buds in Sieverville was so disappointing I have never gone back.

My sister insisted on going to all the “big” spots… Ripley’s, etc. gah. I just wanna be left to my own to walk the town.

My brother lives nearby in Seymour. He and my son collect knives, so they recommended Smoky Mountain Knife Works to me. I saw Bud's Gun Shop, and had to stop in there. I'm glad I went, but not really impressed. Big shop with a lot of floor space and a fair amount of guns.

Yeah i dont care nothing about all the regular attractions. Except for the alcatraz crime museum. Its worth the ticket and walk through. And if your around that area on the weekend there is some great fleamarkets outside of town.

Wasted floor space. Only thing of interest to me was the S&W M10/19/29 Classic, the Stoeger Hammerless Coach; and the 3” GP100.

Question… I know black powder is not considered a “firearm” under the NFA. Could I (legally) purchase the absolutely lovely 1851 Colt reproduction I found at Sevierville Pawn ? Engraved, imitation ivory… absolutely lovely.

You should be able to just pay and walk out with it. I know you can buy them online and have them sent right to your door no ffl needed so you should be able just walk in pawn shop pay and leave.

Had a buddy come into town the other day and I took him to SMKW. He commented that Buds was right across the parking lot. I said "nah I got a better place" and took him out to Asheville Hwy to SMG&A. Way better than Buds.

The few times I've been in buds (I can count on one hand) I have not been impressed at all. Revolving door of staff and kind of know it all blow hards.

I wonder what happened to the Smokey Mountain catalogs. I used to find them regularly in my mailbox although I had never requested one. They slowly dribbled away to one only at Christmas time and are completely gone now.

If you go on there website you can request paper catalogs to be mailed to you. And if you dont ever order or buy anything they will eventually stop sending them. They still dont send out as many as they used to but i get 6 or 7 a year mostly around all the holidays and big sales events

I made a few purchases in the past but probably not enough to meet their requirements to keep sending catalogs. I was just wondering if their catalogs had become obsolete.

I wish all those clothing stores that send catalogs to my wife would get the hint and quit. She always looks through them, says this or that is nice but way over priced, and in the trash they go for me to take to my trash cart and drag out to the road and back every week. The thing is heavy enough without a bunch of unneeded catalogs in it.

Those are good interests to have.

Too bad the trip to Buds wasn’t great. I dropped into the Kittery Trading Post in Kittery Maine when I was in New Hampshire this summer, and it was better than I expected. Guns, two floors of outdoor stuff, winter clothes, live lobsters, the works!

Stay safe.

For anyone visiting the area, check out J. Floyd's Golf & Guns on Hwy 66 in front of the Home Depot in Sevierville. It shares space with the BP convenience store.

It's a small store but they have a decent selection and the prices are usually better than SMKW and Buds.

In Maryville, Bill's Outpost just recently relocated to East Broadway. The new building is laid out oddly but they usually have a decent selection of guns and ammo.

I miss Kittery. The last year and half before I retired out of the Navy was spent there while my ship was in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

I think we went to the trading post once while we were there.

And yes, live lobster everywhere in that area! Cheap, too!
