Any ideas

Is the Ruger ec9s any good?

The Beretta PX-4 would be a great one and so would the S&W SD9VE pistol. I own one of the Ruger EC9s pistols Nd it is a great gun for the price but it is not the gun I grab when i want to go have fun at the range. It is strictly a carry gun and gets the appropriate number of rounds put through it for range practice. That’s it.

Is your friend also looking to buy mags/holster/night sights within that budget? If the $400 can all go to the gun, I’d probably go with a S&W Shield or a M&P 2.0 Compact.

Grab a Gun has the 2.0 for just under $379.

This. You can get an M&P 2.0 or 2.0 Compact for $400 or under after you factor in FFL and shipping, and Shield would be less. I paid $360 out the door for mine last year but that included a $50 rebate that I don't think is available right now. In my opinion M&P's are top of the line polymer striker pistols that are objectively just as good as an equivalent Glock for less money. Subjectively I actually like them better than Glocks so double bonus for me. If you want to pay even less I would say a Ruger is a safe bet.

As a Ruger Fanboi I am going to put in a plug for the Security 9 as a budget 9mm. I have both the standard and compact. Very happy with both of them.

My brother has a S&W SDVE. It is a very good one as well. Feels very good in the hand. I don’t think he has ever had any problems with it. His is 40 caliber.

While my preference is for Glock, IMO these M&P 2.0 line are really sweet and would be my choice at that price point and they are available with and without safety for more choices. The original M&P 9MM pistols are going for around $320 new these days also.

It would be helpful though if OP posted more what he was looking for (striker fired or hammer, metal or poly frame, compact or full size) and for what purposes. There are a lot of really good options new and used at his price point these days. There are tremendous bargains in used .40 pistols these days and I have seen nice examples of SIG P229 .40 at the $400 price point which is a fantastic pistol.

View attachment 857360 He can purchase a full size Ruger SR9 for $300 plus shipping & FFL fee.

I would Hurry to the SR9C before they are sold out. As good as any of the guns mentioned that cost a whole lot more. $300.00 range is a steal. You might have some guilt for paying for such a low price, but don't worry about it. Just enjoy it for a lifetime.

A little more information on intended use would be helpful. Is it a first gun? Will it likely be the only gun or handgun. If it's going to be a "do all" type pistol I say a used G 19. If CC isn't a consideration then I'd say a used G17. If your friend is set on a new gun the M&P's are nice and a great bargain if you dont mind the articulating trigger.

Always best to rent before buying as well.
