Bug out bag, keep it handy?

I have a bakc pack that I keep loaded with a few basic esentials that goes with me every where. It has extra ammo for my CCW piece plus .22lr. First aid supplies. chem lites, matches, lighters, some rope and 550 cord. A couple of different fixed blade knives, flash lite, some extra cash, etc. It also has some of my daily need stuff, extra contact lenses, water, maybe a change of clothes, etc.
Does any one else have a bug out bag or SHTF bag ready to go? How handy do you keep it? What do you keep in it?

That's really the thing to think about.

Where you gonna go? All your "stuff" is at your house. Is leaving really the best idea?

If leaving is somehow the best idea, I would plan on not being able to return for a very long time. Otherwise, why leave?

Unless leaving for a short time like a localized gas leak or something, in which case why a bug out bag at all, just go see a movie....

I think all this bug out bag stuff comes from things like terrorism where the SHsTF fast and unexpectedly and you just may have to bug out with little or no notice. Dirty bombs, maybe even the bomb...etc. A hurricane takes some time and you can actually make decisions.

I keep lots of water, plastic, and duct tape and I plan on riding out a dirty bomb because I really got no better place to go and I do not plan on going out into the country and taking over somebody's farm. Once it rains or the wind shifts that's pretty much over.

You all are going to think me odd, but I think the best reason to have a bug out bag is simply as an exercise in being prepared and an exercise for your mind as to how to get prepared for trouble. Working on and working through your bug-out bag will put your mind in a more prepared state and you'll have the bonus of having some gear ready to boot. That is why I have one started...but not finished. Got the basics stuff like a first aid kit and the easy stuff.

Keeping some basic supplies on you or in your car in case you are stuck away from home or need to ride shanks mare is a good idea. Unless you live in an area where evacuation might be needed at a moment's notice I don't see much point in keeping one at home. Unless you live in a dorm/apartment etc and have significant disincentives to do so, I'd stay put.

I agree with most of the other posts, I'm not going anywhere in an emergency I am staying home.
