Hi Everyone,

Knowing the site, this kind of thing has probably been asked before; but, I am looking at refining my Bug Out Bag's list. I'm just wondering if any of my fellow members have any suggestions or recommendations. I have larger scale backpacks and for the most part they are capable of sustaining us for roughly 5 days...possibly longer depending on circumstances. Thank you in advance for your help and recommendations.

That's not a "bug out" list, that is more like for long term survival. It all depends on why you are vacating your premises in the first place and how long you anticipate staying away.

If you are going to have that much stuff, you should probably get one of these:
teardrop.gif

They are less than $20,000 and they have a kitchen and a bathroom and you can tow it with just about anything! Just because you are in survival mode doesn't mean you can't have decent shelter!

I guess I've been on the farm too damn long. People have to be nuts to spend around $20000 for something like that. I bought a NEW 19' Wilderness 6 years ago that sleeps six, full bathroom, air conditioning, kitchen for $12500.

I would love to get a Wilderness, but...

From the Fleetwood site:

"Thank you for your interest in Fleetwood Travel Trailers. On March 9, 2009, Fleetwood made the decision to exit the travel trailer business. While we will no longer produce new travel trailer products, several Fleetwood dealers still have a variety of our travel trailers and fifth wheels available for purchase. Please feel free to use this website to research our entire product line and to locate a Fleetwood dealer near you."

This whole recession thing really sucks!

OP, you have a few options, but you need to know what you're preparing for.

Most situations, you should stay at your home where you have shelter and the ability to sustain you and your family.

If you're aim is a pack that you can rely on for long term survival, I'd say you have a big issue with sustainability. Most packs are formed to survive short term.

My pack for climbing and hiking is designed to survive until I'm found:

Food:
4 MREs-enough for 2 days, not eating the first day I'll have enough for 3 days

Coast guard food rations-comes in little bite size bricks much lighter than MREs, will last another few days, but really taste bad :)

I have a tiny fold stove, with fuel tablets you can buy at the surplus store to heat any food I find.

Also, little salt packets are free usually, and light.

Gun:
Usually a 1911 with 2 extra mags.

Water:
Water rations in 8 oz. packs.
Iodine tablets for purification
2 Liter pouch for water liner

Shelter:

Nothing big, a few ponchos, and emergency blankets. You can't lug around a tent hiking, so I figure I'll dig with a shovel I have to get into the ground and cover up with nature.

Tools:

Folding knife, multi tool, axe, swiss army knife, K-Bar heavy bowie, flashlight

Fire:
2 Bic lighters, I don't want to mess with flint, and Bics make it through unreal conditions

Distress signals:
Signal Mirror, flare, cell phone

Direction:
Compass, GPS-extra batteries

Health and Beauty
first aid kit, which I added a few items I felt were lacking.
Socks!!! NO one takes extra socks, and after you hike all day and get stuck you'll get blisters soon. Socks also act as a filter for water if you needed.
Wet wipes
Roll of toilet paper
Q-Tips-for me or for the gun to clean if needed

Lastly-all items are aiming at you taking them to extend your survival time. If you use the lighter to start the fire, keep it going, ect....

My pack is designed for me, but if my wife or family come, the second pack makes it easier, containing items like camping pots, cups, and food. In the second pack more food like rice in vaccum packs serve to make it so that long term is more reasonable.

Overall, I probably spent 200 dollars on the backpack and supplies. Pack probably weighs 30 pounds which is fine as I'm even a small guy and can do this. You'll need to change out items as they expire or you see they don't work. MREs as one example last 5-8 years, so I just had to eat the old ones as I replaced them with new ones recently.

GREAT EATING I'LL TELL YA!
