Well I've been looking for a inexpensive 300 win mag for elk hunting. I've been able to narrow it down to these two. What do you think? Weatherby vanguard or a stevens 200.

I would probably go with the Vanguard but its a close call. The 200 trigger is mediocre but there are a lot of upgrade triggers available, even some of the older savage triggers drop in and turn into a great hunting trigger. The 200 certainly has a lot of potential to be home gunsmithed. Barrels swap easy, there are a lot of stocks available, and triggers are easy to swap as well. Out of the box though I have been more impressed with the Vanguard but either way should bag whatever you need a .300 Win Mag for.

I've got a Stevens 200 in 300 Win Mag.

But, with that caliber, I might go with the Vanguard over the Stevens...given what I know now. It kicks rather hard, due to it's light weight. Wasn't a problem then, I only shot it 1-2 times checking zero..the rest was at deer. Now, I shoot it a lot...and 5-6 shots with short sleeves makes you feel it really quick.

Either way, you can't go wrong.

Tikka T3 ......accurate, smooth cycling, lightweight + a good trigger that is adjustable for weight and did I mention accurate.

the wetherby will be better. should have a better made bbl, and should have a better trigger, right out of the box. though the savage trigger is a super easy fix.
