Ok. Let's say I wanted to build an AK. What's involved? I see parts kits listed at places like SOG, and it seems they have everything but a receiver. I know the receiver has to come through a dealer.

So, what else is involved? Do the parts have to be assembled by a gunsmith? By that I mean is there more involved than just putting it together like you'd taken it apart? Or is there any machine work required?

Big subject.

Building an AK can range from assembling a parts kit to a finished receiver, to buying a flat and actually bending, welding, and riveting your own receiver.

Here's some place to find complete info on AK building:

Been there done that. LOVED IT! It is seriously addicting.

I seriously suggest you try. Not that hard and well worth the effort.

For your for your first build might I suggest--

1-- Romanian G series parts kit ($100-130)

2-- Nodak Spud 100% economy receiver $55 (SOOO Much easier than bending your own flat, spot on for the Romanian G kit and super cheap) Seriously a fantastic value for what it costs, I really can't say enough good about them.

If you go the screw build route versus the rivet build method it will save you some more chunk of change. With your compliance parts (another $65 ish) you will still be under $250 for raw parts. If you know someone with access to a press for the barrel pin and barrel, and taps for the trunnions you are good to go!!

Here is mine ;) although I have since changed it back to its original front handguard pistol grip configuration

Might I add that Tapco sells the screws for a "screw-build" project. Apparently if you have basic carpentry skills (drill, screw/drill), you can put together an AK.

I'd like to second the suggestion for going with a NoDak Spud 100% receiver.
I also found an air hammer invaluable on my build, for pressing out the barrel ping and pushing the barrel out of the trunnion.
