Before you freak out about the legalities of the matter let me explain. The C&R doesn't let me get a lower reviever in any way. What it does do is give me discounts on items that make building an AR myself a much more cost-effective option. The savings from Brownells and Midway USA (the two places I plan on buying items) dropped my costs by about $200 for building my dream AR. Makes the $30 well worth it and helps offset Uncles Sams additional "looking over my shoulder" ;)

My current plan is a complete DPMS 24" SS bull barrel upper (not the Super Bull) from Midway USA and building a lower from a DPMS parts kit and the DPMS Stainless Steel lower reciever from Brownells as well as the DPMS target grip with the palm rest. As it will all be DMPS I can't really see any possible problems (other than the normal fitting nessisary) with this build and by getting a complete upper it will save me the cost of a lot of specialty tools or taking it to a gunsmith.

Anyone see a problem with this plan?

Thats about how I build mine.
Once I get the lower I just slap the various parts on it (DPMS parts from Brownells for the lower and buttstock, but for my last build I hit the AR15.com equipment exchange for the upper, barrel assembly and bolt carrier), it doesnt matter where you buy'em or how much of a discount you get.

As long as you have the right tools, it's easy -- just follow the directions you can find on AR15.com if this is your first.

You'll want a starter roll pin punch set, a pin punch set, I also like a set of Starrett punches. An action vice block set, and a barrel nut wrench.

Nothing should need fitting, really. Buy a good one or two-stage match trigger.

Since Snowman doesn't want to be concerned about legalities, I will mention for the info of others that it is OK to do this as long as you don't manufacture an assault rifle - no "evil feature" other than the pistol grip and it is OK.

The C&R license has nothing to do with it, nor is the price you pay for the parts any conern of BATF. Since the receiver is not bought under the C&R, the gun need not be recorded in the licensee's bound book.

Exactly why I started with the disclaimer Jim :) I wanted to make sure no one though I was trying to transfer an AR lower with a C&R liscence. According to my C&R list there are no C&R eligible AR components. A few rare commemorative complete rifles that are far out of my price range but that's about it :)

I've never been a big fan of the "evil features" except for high-capactity magazines and always wanting an SP-1. Must have been all the GI Joes I had as a kid ;)

Everything I'm planning to put together is post-ban compliant and will be even if the ban sunsets, just because that's what I want for the gun. I think I forgot to put a buttstock into my calculations though. . .

Main reason I went with that title is I thought it would catch peoples attention. Before I got my C&R I could always find something close to what I wanted for about the same price as building it, but now I can put together exactly what I want and actually save money over a pre-built model so it's really bumped up my interest in getting one.
