Hi, im in the process of getting a FF rail for my AR and need to get a front sight. I have a Aimpoint red dot with a Matech rear sight is there any advantage-disadvantage between having a fixedfront sight and a flip up?
Well, a fixed model is usually stronger and will resist bumps better. Still, since you're going to be running a red dot, the irons are going to be backups, so I'd go with the flip ups. Good ones are pretty tough.
I've got the mbus black flip ups and I love them. I can through a low mounted scope with some QD mounts so I can go far or pull it off quick and start run and gun.
MBUS are inexpensive compared to just about everything else, and they seem to hold up really well too.
Usually you get what you pay for, but with Magpul I think you get more.
There are more expensive Iron flip up sights if you wanna sped the money on them.(Midwest Industries/Troy ect...)
I would definitely get flip up if you know your going to have an optic.
Research co-witnessing, to see what mount you want.
Either an absolute co-witness or a lower 1/3 co-witness
The advantage of a fixed front sight is that it is more durable, and requires no extra action or breaking of position to put it into use if it becomes necessary to use irons. As for disadvantages of the fixed sight, there really aren't any with a red dot setup. It doesn't get in the way of your sight picture at all, in my experience.
As for the advantages of a flip-up front, they mainly only apply with a low-powered magnified optic or a very long optic that sticks out over the front sight base. Also some feel that they look cooler.
