I just finished up a DIY bullet trap for my backyard shooting range. I will be shooting a majority of 22LR, but I overbuilt the trap in hopes that it will be heavy enough and the design will work with larger calibers too. Mainly just to ensure my deer rifles are zeroed before season. I have a 1/2" steel plate angled at 45 degrees to deflect the bullet downward into a sandbox. I use the term "trap" loosely since I have no interest in actually recovering the slugs for reuse.

Is the 1/2" plate and 45 degree downward angle going to be enough to stop larger calibers?

For most handgun calibers, 1/2" steel plate will be plenty. If you're going to go magnum calibers, you might want AR500 steel.

Post some pictures. I'd like to see your trap!!

I haven't got any pictures, but it's a steel plate at a 45 degree angle as a backstop and wooden triangles as side supports. The steel plate is secured with 6 lag screws. Very simple design. Cost $35 to build and took about 30 minutes to complete, not counting painting.
