Went to the lgs to an sniff around a sw model I was interested in. There were 2 different models that I looked at but both had sharp burrs on the external diameter of the forcing cone that was quite sharp. With the 586 you could almost feel a flange from the burr. The inner diameter was smooth. This was in a 625 and a 586.(already have a 586). Would this disappear with shooting the gun?

I checked my couple of months old 586 bought from the same shop probably same shipment as the one still on the shelf but mine was smooth.

Howdy

If I understand you correctly, although a burr on the outer diameter of a forcing cone reeks of poor workmanship, it will have no effect on how a bullet leaves the cylinder and enters the barrel.

Since the cylinder should never touch the forcing cone, there will be nothing to wear down the burr other than the heat and blast of rounds being fired.

Just for the fun of it I just checked the only modern Smith I have, a 686-6 that I bought brand-spanky new last year. Guess what? There is a tiny burr on one side of the outside diameter of the forcing cone. Never noticed, not at all concerned.

Of course none of my Smiths made when S&W quality was higher have any such burrs on the forcing cone.

It's during cleaning the gun that I'm worried about it. It's quite sharp. If I do get it that is.
